We were due to set off on a trip to the Arctic Circle tomorrow but 2 weeks ago I was diagnosed with a 'problem' that has stopped us going.
Prior to this I made reservations at a campsite in Denmark and paid the required fee.
Having been advised by the Consultant not to go on the trip as he wanted to start my treatment I contacted the campsite explaining the situation and was met with 'No refund' even in exceptional circumstances.
The campsite in question is called Charlottenlund so just be careful if you decide to visit as compassion is not something they have, it's more Profit Centered.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Thanks for your kind wishes.
For claiming on our travel insurance the value is below their minimum limit, so they are also not interested and neither is the credit card I used to make the payment, as they have the same thing.

Sounds about correct and also applies to many campsites around the EU including the UK.

Yep, we had to cancel our Frejus campsite booking back in 2016 having paid 100€ deposit back in 2015.
The reason was my elderly father had become seriously ill, which also meant that we could not go in 2017 either.
We returned to the same campsite last summer, and amazingly they honoured the 100€ deposit from over two years ago, how brilliant was that I thought.
So maybe OP’s campsite could carry the booking over to next year, worth an ask I guess.
I did ask about a voucher to carry over to next year but it wasn't in their 'Cast Iron Rule Book' so ther reply was 'No'

And there were people saying that paying an optional insurance when booking wasn't worth it. Any site I have booked in France has offered insurance to cover repayments in case of unforseen circumstances--usually about a tenner for two weeks.

I have stayed at this campsite before and it's one of my favourites. Super location, charming site and very helpful staff, that work incredibly hard considering how busy this site is.
It's annoying that you are out of pocket, but it's not the campsite's fault that you can't go. Many places have non-refundable reservation fees- that's the way it is and the risk we take if and when we book.
It's also annoying if the amount is too low to claim via travel insurance or credit card, but it sounds like you will be receiving prompt treatment, and maybe cutting your losses for future good health (and future trips) will prove more than worth it.
