Planning a few days in the Black Forest this August and interested in recommendations for the Freiburg area.

I like the look of the sites around Staufen (Belchenblock, Munstertal) but also the sites around Titisee.

I can see that they are both on the train line to Freiburg but it looks like there will be a better selection of restaurants and shops in the Staufen area and may be more to do in that area in the evenings?

Belchenblick has very small pitches in my opinion, and the train noise can be quite intrusive. It's a long time since we were there - my sons were very impressed by the sanitary facilities there but they had to wear hats in the nearby local swimming pool and that didn't impress them. Nor did the 'noise police' in Staufen itself who told them to stop singing (nursery rhymes) as they walked down the road.

However Belchenblick scores 7.5 on the ACSI Card website so others must like it more than we did.

The experience put us off going back to Germany when my sons were children, and we haven't been back. Funny how even the most minor things can put you off a whole country.

We stayed at Camping Munstertal 5 years ago. A terrific site with a station at the entrance. No train noise at the far end of the site other than the barrier alarm. The train took you into Frieburg. All facilities on the site were exceptional. The down side as Val said was small pitches, however a newly opened extension had larger pitches. You could hop on the train to Staufen which was interseting. It had various restaurants/bars and coffee shops. All in all I would return to Munstertal. Just a word of caution, the site is not cheap and you pay for the electric when you leave. It is not in with the site fee

Staufen is a lovely little town. We have stayed at Belchenblick twice. I would agree that the pitches are not large especially if you want to put up an awning. Facilities excellent the last time we were there. It is only a local train service and I expect more people are concerned about the siren on the level crossing! Can't speak for the other site as we have not been.

David

Have you looked at the reviews on here for Freiburg Hirzburg camping? We were there a few weeks ago (haven’t submitted review yet but will) small pitches but ideal location for Freiburg and the surrounding area, friendly staff, spotless facilities. Not much to add that hasn’t already been written. One of the young wardens is an English chap who was really helpful and informative.

I stayed in Titisee a few years ago. The sites round the lake were absolutely packed with vans 'shoehorned' in. We found a reasonable site outside town that had plenty of space. Titisee was OK if you wanted to buy a cuckoo clock or smoked ham. There was also an all year Christmas shop!

The most memorable thing was a storm with torrential rain that blew up without warning and several boats had to be rescued.

I can't say I'd recommend the place, but there is a train to Freiburg.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

We stayed in the Black Forest a couple of years ago.

The camp site issued us all with a Konus Card which gave us free use of the trains and buses.

It was a great way to get about and see the forest and mountains.

The favourite place we visited was Bad Wildebad which had a great funicular railway up into the forest with an aerial viewing platform and in the town an absolutely brilliant thermal bath and sauna centre. (Just be prepared to get naked to take full advantage of the saunas)

I can remember when this was all fields.
