We often find little gems when we go exploring "off the beaten track" or "on the back roads" in France. Sometimes this has been when we have taken a wrong turn or followed a deviation.
Just curious what delights you might have stumbled across?

We ended up at a bloke's 60th birthday party a few years back. We were staying at Camping du Tromeur in Lanildut, so already off the beaten track and could hear music...We followed the sounds after dinner. bottle of wine in hand, realized that we'd rocked up at a private party and tried to make our excuses and leave. They insisted that we stay and later insisted that we perform an English folk song. We obliged with a rousing performance of 'The Ballad of Enver Hoxha' by Attila the Stockbroker as it was the only song to which we both knew all the words.
Colmar, blasted past on the auto route many times.Last time we came back from Germany we came cross country and decided to pay a visit. What a pleasant surprise it was.

Last year we had to do an unexpected stopover - and were near Figeac at the time. We knew someone from here was at a site alongside the Cele river, so we decided to go that way, and found the most delightful valley, site, and villages........!
Another time we were diverted off the autoroute near Aix on Provence, and went cross-country. We followed a narrow road which took us up into a village, where a 'Whitsuntide' procession was going on. We joined the end of it with our car and caravan, following the donkey and over the strew palm leaves! People clapped when we went through so it was fortunately treated with good humour!
We stopped for a lunch break on a car park next to a river whilst we were heading for our next stopover. We saw people passing back and forth over a footbridge and after lunch went ourselves. This was Sommieres, we loved it, and found a campsite in the town centre. Booked in and stayed 4 days, and have been back most years since.
Another campsite we found by accident is Mery sur Seine. We were passing through the village on our way to somewhere to stay, saw the campsite sign, booked in, and again have been back most years since.

We used to play "Left or Right" when approaching a major junction. It meant we never had any real idea of where we were going.
When exploring the Rhone Valley region we ended up in Pelussin
The owners were making it a legacy for their grandchildren and wanted to try out things on the guests. We tried various meals that grandma cooked, spent a night in a mobile home to provide a critique of their hospitality, sampled wines that they were thinking of providing in the restaurant.
Try long distance walking. You will find places and meet people that you would be unlikely to find driving the back roads.

Great replies! We too have driven past Colmar and when we actually stopped and explored the local area we were surprised how lovely the town and nearby villages are.
We found Najac by accident too!
