i holiday in both france and spain. spain may and france august.
spain is most definatelly cheaper for everything.
i would stock up on fuel, as its much cheaper.
wine is equally cheap with france and the wine will be spanish, Rioja etc.. you can get a palletable bottle for under €2/bottle.
beer you can buy in 1L bottles whereas in french supermarkets they seem to only stock 25cl bottles or perhaps 440ml cans of heineken or 1664.
i dont find the quality of french fruit and veg in the supermarket that good. the fruit in spain is excellent.i think perhaps the locals use a green grocers rather than the supermarket?
and when we are on holiday in france we use the local Aldi because its more reasonably priced than the super U, casino or whatever and easier to find what you need in because its like the Aldi in our town.

We have just come home from Spain and France. Spain definitely cheaper for fuel and food but I think wine is cheapest in France especially if you get it at Lidl although your nearest one from Lacanau is in Ares about 40 mins drive. There is a good SuperU in Lacanau and a small one in Lacanau ocean.
I'd stock up on spanish stuff that you like before moving to France. So if you're mad keen on Manchego, chorizo, the tins of roasted tomato puree or specific wines fill up on them. Then buy french stuff that you like in France.
Edit: You can fill up in Spain but unless you're towing a bowser surely you can't really stock up on fuel can you?

Our Marseillais neighbours on a site near Montpellier disappeared for a day, and returned with a boot full of cases of booze, mostly Pastis, which we were invited to taste. They told us it was about €3-4 cheaper per bottle, so worth stocking up. Sean’s advice seems sound.
Here in the Aude in France many people go shopping regularly in Spain.. Fuel, gas bottles (with Spanish regulators), meat, wine and spirits are all cheaper and so the trip more than pays for itself, especially when combined with a meal in a beachside bar somewhere.

Is why we are spending most of this year's holiday in Spain ...
The downside ... spanish campsites, on the whole, are not as spacious as most french sites ... though, if you search, there are good ones ... but not as many as in France.

We also found spirits to be dirt cheap when we went to Italy in 2014 & 17 - think a 75cl bottle of Ricard was something like 9 euro.
Lidl is the place to get wine in France, we just stocked up on 20 bottles equal mix of Red and White.
Not a massive selection to go at in Lidl, but 13% Red and 12.5% Whites made for a good quality selection, although I am no expert, but can spot and avoid the rubbish stuff.
Average price in that Lidl shop for the 20 bottles that we bought was £2.19 per bottle conversion rate at 1.12€ to the £ which is what we are getting with the Halifax.
Can’t complain at that, although the 3/5lt Box’s would work out cheaper, but the box’s encourage you to drink more than you should, and you can’t beat the pop of a cork, no screw tops here lol.
Is it really going to make that much difference to the cost of the holiday? You have already paid a massive amount of money for your ferry fare so another £10/20 either way on shopping is hardly going to make a difference. Time to enjoy the holiday rather than worry about the price of food!!!!

Not to mention the additional cost of the fuel to get you to Spain in the first place.

Lidl is my shop of choice for my day to day reds although I tend to go for their Beaujolais Villages at about 4.50 euro and Touraine Gamay at 3.80 euro - except when they have their wine fair on and they have a gold medal Cotes du Rhone at under 2.20 euro if you buy 6.
Their sparkling Cremant d'Alsace at under 5 euro a bottle is a steal, as is their Alsace Reisling at under 4 euro.
