We watched as 2 labradors were placed in their caravan for the trip from Ouistreham to Portsmouth. I asked the owners if they always did this, they said they did and questioned why we did not do so also.
Safety etc., what's your opinion fellow dog travellers?

I wouldn't dream of leaving my dog in the caravan on such a long crossing.

Interesting Help page on the BF website.

We have crossed uk to France o/night Plymouth /Roscoff several times and our dog has remained in the car or caravan or motorhome without any problems, she normally sleeps all night anyway when at home.
We have crossed the channel over 30 times via various routes and she has always remained in the vehicle, never had any problems.

Agree. Have never done it myself, but seen it so often on the same crossing, not sure what the problem is.

There are no kennels on either of the ships on the Portsmouth to Caen route. One of the ships has a few cabins where dogs can go, the other doesn't, so in that case it's dog in car, dog in Motorhome, dog in Caravan, or go some other way.

Most dogs will be fine ... unless over domesticated 'spoilt' ones ... after all, a cosy caravan/m'home/car (ventilated), is probably five star compared to many outdoor kennels!

This is why we always use the tunnel. I wouldn’t leave my dog on the car deck.

We always put our dogs in the caravan with water for the short crossing. They more relaxed than being cooped up in a car.

Presumably the owner makes the judgment for their dog knowing the dogs own behaviour best. I have used the tunnel for preference with my current dog, but have used the short ferry crossing with my previous dog, and he was always fine.

Hi ,when do you put them in the caravan, we’re taking our two to France in 2 weeks and I’m worried about leaving them in the car , was thinking of putting them in the caravan, I think it will be cooler and more space for them. I didn’t think it was allowed until I read this post

They are put in the caravan with water once we have boarded and parked up. We have done this also for the St Malo crossing, but for Santander they go into kennels.

For the last few years we have used the tunnel where the dog stays with you, living in Lancashire in September we are heading to Arnhem but I will drive 300 miles then up through Belgium rather than leave the dog on the car deck on the Hill to Rotterdam, after all the dog does not ask to come with you.
