My wife dislikes tunnels so I am looking at taking our twin axle Bailey Senator towed by a 2.5 Auto Diesel Range Rover from the Lake Maggiore area to Interlarken via the two passes Simplon and Grimselin mid June. Has anyone any experience of them either with a twin axle or single and any decent sites in the area.

Regards John D

We shall be travelling the opposite way this year.   The Simplon is quite easy.  maximum 1 in 9  The road on the Italian side is typical of Italian roads, being a bit rough in places.   The Swiss side is as usual, very smooth.   Not used the Grimsel yet but a possibility this year.

Our site on Maggiore is Conca d'oro between Baveno and Verbania near to the River Toce.  It is on the lake and has very good facilities.   This will be our 4th visit.   At Interlaken our site is Jungfraublick.   A small very clean site.   Superb views up the Lauterbrunnen valley to Jungfrau. Our 6th or 7th visit.  The car normally never turns a wheel whilst we are there, mountain railway station 10 minutes, supermarket 10 minutes, more basic (lidl, Netto type) 2 minutes, Interlaken 15/20 minutes.

Hello John D.
We travelled the Grimsel pass a few years ago in mid June. We had to stay an extra few days in Willderswill, near Interlaken, until the pass was cleared of snow. It was like fairy land driving through pass the snow on each side of the road was as high as the caravan,
but the road surface was just wet. I was towing a 420 Van Royce with a Disco TDI. Just listen to the local radio they broadcast in English every morning at 8.30.

Hi and thanks to you all for your suggestions. If the Grimsel pass is closed then its going to have to be the St Gottard or the shorter San Bernardino tunnel. Its odd because we are travelling over on the Eurotunnel which she doesnt really mind, and she is not a strong swimmer!

Thanks again John D
