When we have crossed to Calais and gone on to the Dordogne, we have stopped en route in Beaumont-Sur-Sarthe. A nice little municipal. Not flash or anything, but perfectly pleasant and a good stop over for a few nights.

We have managed to get a spot where we wanted to go in the Dordogne (Moulin de Paulhaic) so that's sorted now. Just the crossing and a stop somewhere in france to figure out, was going to try camping olivet but all booked up the day we need (but annoyingly not the day before typical!) So currently looking for options somewhere between Calais and Sarlat that would leave about 4 hrs driving on day of arrival.
Plan so far is
Dover overnight 6th
Somewhere overnight 7th
Main site...
Frustrating leaving it last minute and going so early in the holidays, would have much preferred the end of August but dd needs to be back on a fixed date so it is what it is.
Our usual stop going to the Dordogne is Camping de Sologne, Salbris; just off the A20 and a comfortable 4ish hour drive from Sarlat.
Recently found Huttopia Les Chateaux, virtually in the grounds of Chambord chateau. It’s a large site so should have space; well managed, slightly off the main route. Online booking available, it’s a bit further away.
Netherton: Thanks for that, going to email them shortly as I don't think they have online booking?
Has anyone stayed at CAMPING LA GRANDE SOLOGNE as that's showing as having availability for the night we need (7th) and it looks like it would only be 4 ish hours to Sarlat from there.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far, bookmarked quite a few for next year!!
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Camping La grand sologne is at Salbris and is popular with lots on here, I have stayed several times. They stay open until 10pm. There is a supermarket close by for a cheap fuel fill up and a few places to eat nearby in town. The kale makes a nice evening walk too.
Camping La Grande Sologne is actually at Nouan le Fuzelier, but is a good site for overnight. There is also Camping La Sologne at Salbris which is just a few miles further south - which is alongside a lake, and where the coypu and their babies used to come on the pitches and scavenge for food!
We've stayed at both over the years, and both are fine for overnight stops.
We've stayed at Nouan loads of times. A very convenient site given its proximity to the autoroute, quite simple but well run.
If you have a couple of days to kill, some of the chateau on the Loire are within a reasonable drive. We did Clos Luce (Leonardo di Vinci's place in Amboise) from there which was a great day out.
