Just wondered if anyone had used this particular premiere classe for an overnight? Thinking more "safety" of the camper... While it will have wheelclamp and hitchlock on usually we either do Rouen (Now a Kyriad) or have used Orleans Sud which both have fenced off "secure" parking but that particular one seems to be on a retail park and open. May be worrying over nothing but just thought I'd ask.

Thanks

There is no secure parking at that particular Premiere Classe - as you say it's on a retail park. You might find that the 'ACE hotel' Chartres is around the same price, but nicer rooms..... and more secure parking.

We've stopped booking these chain hotels as we find them so depressing, and have looked for Chambre d'hotes instead, finding some wonderful places - most of them in more rural areas with plenty of safe parking and actually cheaper and including a lovely breakfast. We've found them through booking.com

A tip, added later, is to use google maps 'Street View' to look in close detail at parking at these hotels. That way you can feel either reassured or choose somewhere else.

Agree Ace Hotel Chartres. Stayed there earlier this year. Very nice, but it doesn't appear on google maps yet!!

In contrast to Val's findings we just love the Primiere Classe hotels, although we only book the ones that also have a Campanile Hotel/Restaurant in the same grounds.

We use the same ones almost every year for our fortnight campings down in Frejus.

Armbouts Chappel (Dunkerque)
Chalon Sur Saone
Salon de Provence

I can highly recommend all off the above, and the 15% you get of the Campanile restaurant meal including drinks for being a Premiere Classe client, is an added bonus.

We don't find them depressing at all, and at £31 per night what's not to like.

I think many others must share our opinion as the Premiere Classe we stayed in scored 6.3 out of 10 - the same score as that at Ambouts where you say you stay.

This is what I remember we mentioned in our 'What don't you like..........' review last time:

1. Filthy and very worn maroon(????) carpets on the stairs.
2. Scuffed grey worn out wallpaper all the way up the staircase
3. A washbasin with a broken waste.
4. A shower which would only stay in one position
5. In that position the spray went directly to the curtain which was too short and was pushed out of the shower tray, flooding the whole bathroom and bedroom before OH realised.
6. Inadequate, washed out, greyish and thin towels
7. A rather grubby (and a bit smelly) toilet
8. Stained covers on the beds and very lumpy pillows
9. The main door closed at 9.00 pm and you had to find your way around the back to get back in
10. The 'extractor' in the bathroom had a loud hum which got under your skin
11. The room was airless and the window opening was so narrow that it wasn't possible to get fresh air into the room.
12. One electric socket was in a difficult to reach position
13. The bathroom light switch was miles away from the bathroom.
14. The only socket was nowhere near a mirror so it was impossible to dry my hair in the way I usually do.
15. Breakfast included tiny croissants, watered down orange juice, dry and tasteless bread. We could help ourselves from two slices of plastic ham or plastic cheese on a plate - which was replaced by another two slices of each when those two were taken............! There was plain yoghurt or plain yoghurt. The only fruit on offer was a couple of dried out oranges.

I think the whole hotel was suffering from lack of maintenance. So for us, what's not to like - well everything!

And that particular Premiere Classe cost us 62 euros, for the privilege - perhaps because it was Bastille Day. But for 41 euros this Bastille Day (and with a review score of 9.9 out of 10) we had a fabulous en-suite room with balcony, our own garden area with outside table and chairs. We had our own fridge with cold drinks, and space to put our own things which needed to stay cool. On arrival we were offered a glass of cider. The bedroom and bathroom were immaculate and the bathroom offered a full range of toiletries, soaps and shower cap. The breakfast, which was included offered fresh fruit from the garden, plain or fruit yoghurts, proper Bayonne ham, three types of cheese, selections of bread, croissants, pain au raisin (all full size) and brioche, home made jams and honey, and two complementary packs of flavoured tea when we left. Our room had a kettle, hairdryer, choice of several different pillows, extra bedspread and blanket(s), two proper comfortable chairs, a desk to work at, proper bedside lights, mirrors and loads of electric sockets.

As you say, what's not to like!

Part of the reason we had our van converted into a camper. Instead of parking it outside a hotel to break the journey we'll use an Aire or Municipal with zero set up. We normally used 2 hotels each way.

Val : we've only stopped at a couple of premiere classe and the one outside Rouen was really nice (but too close to Calais to make it a sensible place to break), the one in South Orleans though sounds a little like your experience more that it was obviously showing its age but we had decent towels and plenty of hot water so for our rabble it was doable.

When your travelling with 3 now teens (who travel well and never moan when they've been couped up for hours) premiere classe for us at least is an affordable overnight stop.

Personally I would love a vw van or similar as either we're doing it all wrong or putting up the Pennine for one night after X hours has always been a faff with things taken out of the camper and stuffed in the car meaning you have to get food first if nothing on-site or leave someone with all the stuff out of the camper while you get food, not always ideal but possibly easier now my lot are older so something to think about next year ... When I plan a bit earlier too :-)

Yep Val, we use our own kettle in the room, which is a 1,600 watt model, ideal for filling our flask up with boiling water so that we can have a 3pm cuppa on the autoroute Aire, the water from the flask goes into our Waeco in car kettle, so that we can get a rolling boil, to make a cup off tea, the car kettle only takes 8 minutes to boil.

We were at Armbouts-Cappel Dunkerque last Thursday night, £31 and had a slap up meal in the Campanile restaurant which included a bottle of vin rouge and a couple of other drinks total bill for the meal was €38.

As for electric sockets we had two, one to run our Waeco CF25 Fridge, and the other I converted to a four gang with a plug in Sucko to UK adapter, so Mrs Francais could run her hair dryer, and charge up the Phone and iPad and charge the camera battery.

The room and hotel were all spot on, the only critique I could make, was that the double bed had a duvet on it, temps were at 30 C, so we discarded the duvet, and just used a single cotton sheet.

We arrive at these hotels around 6pm, go for a meal and then get to bed, no need for anything fancy, it’s just somewhere to get your head down for the night, and then back on the road the next morning.

They are a means to an end along the 1,100 mile journey to the main campsite and back again a fortnight later.

We have done Logis in the past, and yes they are beautiful, but they are no way as cheap as the Premiere Classe, and can be a faff to find.
and park, the Premiere Classe are close to the autoroute and easy to find and park, and that’s all we want for an over night stop.

We did use to use the Formule 1 hotels when they were €15 per night, now I will agree that they are definitely depressing places to spend a night, and would not ever entertain them again.

Have you looked at B&B hotels? They tend to have secure parking. Have 2 in that area and another not too far.

Hmm hadn't looked at B&B will have a look though. At the moment it looks like we're going to try a municipal for an overnight near Olivet (if they get back to me!).

Only part of that the other half is worried about is where to put all the stuff from the camper we have to unpack to use it for one night. But I'm game to try it!!

When we did enroute camps instead of getting big tent out & all the gear we used 2 small backpacking tents & eat out or used the Trangia.

There's a municipal site in Chartres - not a particularly nice one, but very handy for the route or alternatively a really nice one at
Courville sur Eure - which isn't far from Chartres.

Val: Thanks for that, I think now we know what time we're getting the ferry across (9 or earlier) we're going to aim to get to Orleans or further...

Thankfully I take the old adage I'm in no rush (well I am as the Rose wine is very nice!) but if we can trim it down to 4hrs on the day of arrival it means getting more time to just relax with the camper all setup!

We've stayed overnight at Vatan, between Vierzon and Chateauroux - and that's an excellent site for overnight if you get that far - with an road into Vatan from autoroute to the north on arrival and a road out of Vatan and back to the autoroute to the south when you leave.

Rochat le Belle Isle at Chateauroux is another site we've overnighted at in the past - and there is a nice little restaurant just adjacent to the site.

Plenty of options. Vatan is manned, I think until about 7.00 pm - and Chateauroux unti later than that.

We've unpacked the camper for 1 night, and it was very full. We just popped a small ground sheet down under the back of the camper and put all the bits from inside under the back bed and zipped the skirt around. We put up the wardrobe but didn't bother with the sink/stove unit. Infact we even kept the middle as a bed. All we took out where the extras we store which meant we were unpacked within 20 mins and able to pack away quickly the next day.

Leave beds made up, strap down the duvets etc and refill before folding.
