we will be heading for somerset on friday but are going to Portsmouth caen bound in late august.
we went to plymouth though on the first saturday of the summer holidays and the M5 was like 'the whackey races'
as soon as i joined at J7 i was staying at 60mph and many caravans were flying past us, i have never seen so many caravans. then everything would stop as we queued to pass a pile of matchwood swept on to the hard shoulder. then it would all speed up again and perhaps 20 miles further, a wrecked caravan one side, a microwave oven in the fast lane, on it went until we were on the A38.
it was a good job we left at 7am for a 15.30 crossing.
i am guessing it will be similar carnage for us on friday. give yourself plenty of time!

I would be inclined to leave on the Thursday and stay over night on a site near Portsmouth. Last year on our way to Portsmouth, there was an accident on the A38 and we were stopped for nearly 3 hours on the road. Took us overall 6 hours to get to Portsmouth from West Midlands. Luckily we were stating over night otherwise would have been panicking. BTW this was not the beginning of any holiday season.
