Hello all,
I have just returned from a week at Camping Saint Claire in Neufchatel-en-Bray. Lovely site just over two hours from Calais when towing, on the edge of town and with a lovely cycle path (Avenue Verte) running past. I wondered whether there are other similar sites out there within 3 hours (ish) of Calais, so we can "Channel Hop" for a few days. Up until now we have always gone to family sites with entertainment etc during school holidays, but now there are just the two of us, the above criteria is what we are looking for and we can go out of season as well. We have stayed at Camping Saint Claire and this site, and enjoyed them both.

Two hours the other way from Calais and you reach the first site in the Netherlands - Camping de Meidoorn at Sluis. The town itself is delightful , the site is smart, and it's within a bike ride of the coast.

Two hours south of Calais will take you to the town of Eu. The campsite is in the grounds of the magnificent Chateau, where Queen Victoria signed the original Entente Cordiale with France - quite a splendid setting. And again it's just a short bike ride to the coast.

The site at Eu has for years been one of our favourites for a couple of nights on the way back. We were there last week, however, and the permanent `vans seem to have multiplied (or maybe they were all in use), and they all seemed to have all their worldly possessions strewn around them - - fridges, kids bikes, sofas - - and it really spoilt it for us. We probably won`t return again.

I would agree with Netherton about looking at Holland. We are absolute Francophiles but this year have done a couple of trips to Holland and loved it. Two sites worth a look are Camping Den Molinshoeve (ACSI 193), and Campsite De Vlaschaard (ACSI 3414). The first is just over the border from Belgium and has cycle paths to the beach (5 minutes) and to Knokke and has the best shower block you will ever come across. The site is very well looked after and the owners are very friendly.
The second is just on the edge of Middelberg with a dedicated bike path right into what is a lovely town, and many other bike paths. It is quite a small site with just 9 or 10 touring pitches, but good facilities and has a great feel to it. We were planning to just overnight there but stayed for 5 nights eventually.

We use a site at Brighton les Pins, near Cayeaux sur Mer. It's in the ACSI book, usually quiet. My reviews are on here. Cycle one way into Cayeaux for market and shopping, or the other way a cycle path along the headland and coast.

We spent 5 nights at Camping Jeugstadion at Ypres in Belgium last week, about 60 miles from Calais. It’s a busy site with a lot of British visitors but generally quiet and ideally placed for the cycle tracks in and around the town and the surrounding areas, including many of the WW1 sites. Also (like Neufchâtel) there are supermarkets close by. The town itself with its huge main square surrounded by very impressive buildings and of course the Menin Gate and the ramparts is well worth visiting, though is, of course, full of tourists! Away from the centre, however, it’s much quieter, so don’t let that put you off.
As the site is so busy (and there are only 22 caravan pitches) it’s worth booking or checking availability in advance.

Not quite sure how far in time it is from Calais but we enjoyed L'Isle des Trois Rois (ACSI 1351) at les Andelys. Large pitches, right on the R. Seine, as it goes by chalk cliffs. Lovely village on banks of river, overlooked by ruined castle. 20 miles from Monet's garden at Giverney. We were there in October last year on the way home from the Pyrenees.

That's the one I recommended.
Lovely site, been their twice and loved it.
But please, don't tell everyone.
