Hi all, we’ considering the FICC rally in Rome next year and would appreciate any hints, tips etc regarding the best route from Calais to Rome and places to stay and stop over for few days here and there en route. Although the rally is only for 10 days we intend to make it a six weeks or so trip. Thanks in advance for your advice.
Regards
Chris.
Apologies, forgot to add that we will be towing a caravan as opposed to a Motorhome holiday

Personally speaking ....I would go toll free to the Swiss border at Basel (via Lille, Namur and Luxembourg) , buy vignettes at the border to cross under the Alps via the St Gotthard tunnel, and then pay tolls for the Italian autostrada. But spread out a paper map and have a look.

And where to stop on the way really depends on your interests and what you want to see and do - architecture, history, gardens, lakes, and mountains? You have the lot on that route. I myself would include Alsace, the French railway museum at Mulhouse and Lake Lucerne. Your choice will no doubt differ.

I’ve always fancied meandering down to Nice getting the ferry to Corsica then the ferry to Sardinia and then the ferry to Civitavecchia just north of Rome. Others can recommend a route back I’m sure.

If you’ve got six weeks to do it in, it would be perfect

Ken

I did it in 2000, but can't make many recommendations as we mainly slept in laybys. However on the way down we hit the Med just after Genoa and followed the coast from there. I would love to return to the Cinque Terre villages, they were beautiful. We camped just north of Rome and went in on the train.
Coming back we visited Florence, Verona and Lake Garda.

Seeing that the rally is 24 July to 2 August I'd be inclined to meander down through France to the SE for the first 10 days in July (maybe include last week in June as well?) before the season gets busy, then cross into Italy and spend a week or so going down via (some of) Genoa, Pisa, Florence, San Gimignano, Siena.

Gives you a week or so to get back by your route of choice - although I'd avoid A7/A6 in the Rhone Valley in France (Avignon/Lyon/Beaune).

Thank you for all of the replies so far. I will bear all of the options and ideas in mind, I would think that the route through Switzerland might be the most appealing. As I say, if we do it we will meander on down there, taking six weeks or so.
Thanks again, I'll let you know, nearer the time' what we have decided upon.
Regards
Chris

If you've not been to Lake Garda, you might want to spend a few days there.
