Ann - you say touring with a camper but show a caravan in your profile - if you have a campervan/motorhome you will be able to avail yourselves of the many lovely Stellplatz along the Mosel.
We have our favourite one at Wintrich. Very nice little site with limited loo's and showers but adequate for a few nights stay.
There are a couple of restaurants and a supermarket (edika) in the village with a bus stop to take you into Bernkastel Kues. A river boat also stops at the site for a brief cruise along the river to Bernkastel.
The Café Moselbrück serves home made cakes with very nice coffee.
Only motorhomes/campervans can stay on a Stellplatz so be aware.
Cost is €10 per night which includes electricity and wifi. We usually spend at least 4 nights here usually to recharge our batteries ready for either setting off on our journey or returning to Calais for homeward bound.

The Mosel and Black Forest are quite a distance apart.
If you have a camper, then This site gives full details of most, but not all, the motorhome halts in Germany. It's in German, but Google will translate it.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
We visited the Mosel area last month (stayed 9 nights at a good little campsite in Krov - just added to the listings so review to follow), absolutely beautiful area.
Have sold our caravan and now have a camper... had forgotten to change my profile. Not heard of stellplatz so thanks for the advise, Are there many about.. we
usually use acsi camping card sites.

Hope you have a fab trip. We're here at the mo' but on our way up to the Netherlands tomorrow. Have enjoyed our trip as I love Germany, but can't say I loved our site in the Bodensee area as we were squashed in with little room, but I know it's a popular spot for summer holidays. Like our stopover site NR Frankfurt as I type though.
Anyways, I posted to say we haven't had a problem paying with cards at any supermarket, though havent used them all. I'm now stocked up with spatzle and rahm sauce as I miss those from when my parents lived in Switzerland for years.
I may be too late to comment - but love Germany, my spiritual home as I spend many years there in the 80's in the Army. One of my favourite supermarkets is Kaisers - look out for the big red coffee pot. As for grub, plenty has been advised, but if you are camping and like boiled eggs, look out for Party Eggs in the shops, brightly coloured in a clear box, but they are ready boiled for you!
For cheap drink (mostly beer) look out for the https://www.trinkgut.de/. Their prices are really cheap for full crates, and considering you are paying the deposit too (Pfand) still cheap. They also sell spirits and wine. There are a couple around the Eifel region as you are heading home. You should be able to find them on your sat nav.

I'm just passing by here and have to smile a little about your enthusiasm for party eggs. They are such an everyday article for me, that I never would have thought they could be unusual for others.
Frankly, I think party eggs are a very miserable substitute for a real, warm, wax-soft boiled breakfast egg. Ok for a picnic or something, but that’s about it.
But I also had to think of a little experience from our last holiday in England:
We wanted to treat ourselves to a full English breakfast on the campsite. Now our oldest would have liked to have a boiled egg. But that was a challenge for the very friendly ladies behind the bar. They discussed a little among each other and were noticeably confused. Then they asked: "A boiled egg? In a shell?
We finally agreed on fried eggs to everyone's relief, but since then it has been a catchphrase in the family. Whenever one of us wants a boiled egg, another one asks in astonishment: "A boiled egg? In a
shell?"
It's these little moments that make travelling so wonderful.
