The highest campsite I know of in the Alps is Camping de la Meije at La Grave - it's at the foot of the glaciers, about 1500m. above sea level on the road going up from Bourg d'Oisans to the Lautaret pass and then over to Briancon. But someone may know of one higher than that.

Not in France but Val Veny in Italy - the glaciated valley at the foot of Mont Blanc near Courmayer (just through the Mont Blanc tunnel) is probably slightly higher - it contains 3 campsites - we've used la Sorgente twice on our trips to Italy.
The scenery is stunning - it is also a strange feeling that although you're at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif looking at snow covered peaks thousands of feet above, you're higher than Ben Nevis.
Not mountains but wonderful sea breezes in northern Brittany - wide expanses of virtually deserted beach around St Brieuc's Bay. We can't do altitude because of my husband's breathing problems, but this was certainly bracing! Pretty towns with beautiful flowers everywhere, not the rather sad frazzled look everything had in the Loire! And of course amazing seafood.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

Great site that one. Easier to get to now the Chambon Tunnel has reopened on the Grenoble side.
Another vote for Pyrenees Natura its a lovely site. We were there in 2013 and were lucky enough to have snow on the mountains even though it was mid June. Tried to add a photo but not worked.
