we use a site around 40 mins from Calais to be safe

we have used this site for the last 5 years when we return from the south of france before the ferry home
There's an enormous uncrowded beach stretching south for a few miles from Calais harbour - great for anyone with children and/or dogs and a day to spare - and there are two plain but decent campsites with beach access within ten minutes of the ferryport - look up Bleriot Plage and Sangatte - and a new, free Motorhome aire has opened recently at Sangatte too. Yes, completely safe !
The most scary thing at Camping Plage de Bleriot is the Warden if you arrive after hours. His wife runs the office until 6pm and then he comes out after hours and demands to know why campers are arriving late. After letting off steam he'll let you in anyway.
Camping Les Tamaris at Oye-Plage is near the small town in the countryside and close to the coast, about 12 from the port at Calais and a couple of miles from Grand Fort Philippe. It’s a small, simple site, beautifully kept, with lots of flowers and well-mown grass and a friendly, welcoming owner. Probably worth an email if you’re thinking of going as it’s only small.

I wasn`t aware of the aire at Sangatte but have just "Googled" it, it looks good for an overnight after crossing to Calais early evening, which is what we usually do - - especially as the MH section at the Aire de la Baie du Somme was closed off when we went there a few weeks ago. Thanks for passing that on.
Hi Badger, yes the word gets around - and the new Aire is free too at Sangatte.
Calais town council opened their own Aire a couple of years ago but are charging 10 euros for overnight parking there. I bet a lot of motorhomes will roll down the coast road to Sangatte instead. CamperContact has details of them both.
We stayed at Camping Des Noire Mottes in Sangatte in July (in ACSI book). It was fine for an overnight stop. Can recommend restaurant Le Blanc Nez - fabulous fish and seafood. The boulangerie in Sangatte is also very good.

Camping Grand Gravelot in Calais is very good, secure and short walk to the seafront and beach with restaurants. Its slightly longer walk to town centre. There is Aldi very close, also quick drive to ferries. It is new municipal site with adjacent aire for camping cars.
