Yes, more often than not, we just show our ACSI card (Not ACSI ID card).
Some keep it for the duration of the stay/until paid, some just note down the name and address etc and return the card immediately.
Before I had ACSI, we used to give a photocopy of passports (which we take with us).
Happy to show them the actual passport, and allow them to photocopy if they wish, but never would I leave the actual passport with a stranger for more than a minute or so. That goes for anywhere, be that camp site, hotel, whatever. If they insisted they keep it, I'd go elsewhere (which has never occurred, I may add!)

On the site I referred to, they wanted to see our passports, but did not want to keep them. Like you, no issue with that. We wouldn't let any campsite keep our passports either, and have never been asked to leave them on any campsite.
