Hello all, just starting to vaguely think about 2-3 weeks camping in Europe (tent) starting in early September 2020 - could include any of Northern France, Southern Germany, Austria, Northern Italy etc, depending largely on the weather (if necessary we'll chase the sun and could end up anywhere!).
We haven't camped in continental Europe for quite a few years and never in September so not sure how busy it'll be, but we really want to be as flexible as possible.
From experience will we need to pre-book, or at that time of year will most sites be getting a lot quieter?

There's no way you'll need to book at that time of year.

Edit: If you have specific requirements you'll need to book. If you just want a nice spot for a tent you'll be fine.

Make sure you have an ACSI book and discount card, there will be lots of sites available, and the book will tell you which they are.

Friends back from a short tour to Italian Lakes, end September early October, found sites very full and they had to try two or three before finding a space. Como was especially busy.

The only time I have ever booked was in September for a few days at Knaus Campingpark in Koblenz - and I only booked a couple of weeks in advance. Just as well as it was full and plenty of vans were being turned away.

BUT - this was the exception and everywhere else we stopped was quiet. Unless you want a specific site that is popular all year, I wouldn't bother to book. Plenty of time to think about it.

Thanks everyone, it looks as though we don't need to book unless there's somewhere we absolutely want to guarantee. So we'll get an ACSI, do some general research then just go wherever the weather takes us.
As long as we can get a reasonably level pitch that isn't right next door to a bar or children's playground (love children but quite enjoying the fact that ours have both moved out and we don't have any grandchildren yet!) then we're happy. In over 100 years of camping between us (yes, we both started rather young... ) we've never used an electric hookup but I splashed out and bought a cable in the sales last year so might even treat ourselves to power if it's available!
I notice that there's an ACSI app, is it worth getting? Reviews seem varied.
Thanks again

Nope, no booking needed. We have travelled in September, October and May June and also July August(was worst summer they had in 30yrs) and have never booked a site(we in camper) but as others have said you need to get that Acsi book and card.
