Thanks for all your suggestions, folks. There are some really lovely ones there.
OH has now queried whether travelling abroad this year is valid as we have a new dog and don't know how he will react to the caravan - for various reasons we can't test this beforehand. Also done some quick costings on going with dogs or leaving them behind. Neither is cheap! Gutted! My heart says go, my head says he is probably right.

You must go!
You know you'll regret it if you don't.
And your dog will never forgive you for deny the chance to meet a french poodle or two!

I have always intended to go camping in France, just never got round to it yet.
I have earmarked Carnac as the first area to try, to include the Loire Valley and the Alps region at a later date. I may go further south during the cooler months as I don't like the heat.
Hopefully, I shall be able to go soon after getting my camper van, and shall get the dog's injection, test, and paperwork sorted out in readiness for his trip abroad. He had a passport in the past, however it has expired.

You must do it, French seem to be very good at camping, it’s almost like a national family last time. There are many very good well laid out campsites with lots of activities and “animations” and they are everywhere. From full on holiday camps with water parks through to the municipal sites most towns have.
The roads are fantastic and, other than the mid weekend of the French “factory fortnight” last 2 weeks of July to first 2 weeks of August. The roads are fast and free flowing with plenty of nice places to stop for a rest.
I have stayed at Carnac with my caravan and it’s very nice and also ridden my Motor bike around the eastern side, Annecy, Rhône alps, route Napoléon etc and it’s absolutely stunning. Do it now, book the tunnel and head out there. If you are easy about facilities You don’t need to book campsites you will always find one.
We stay in the vendee at a full on family site with a water park in it so do book this well in advance.
You will never want to camp in Blighty again 😀
