I usually pay by card and tip by cash.

Like Val, I’m happy to leave 10% for good service and a good meal.

I’m not sure about deducting the wine as the waiter / chef / dishwasher don’t get anything off a large mark-up, but we are all different.

Also can’t be sure the waiter shares the tip either, come to that.

Friend who lives in Spain always says you only tip small change there and adding 10% to a coffee or meal bill is nonsense, but the coffee is so cheap in Spain that 10% is literally small change anyway.

I object to a service charge. And why should some restaurants apply a service charge only to tables of 8 or more?   I’ve never understood that one?

Tipping is optional but I know someone who was chased down a Florida Street by a waiter asking why no 20% tip was left?

I'm with SGThomas regarding the subject of tipping.

I feel annoyed when a percentage is automatically added to my bill, it should be up to the customer.

My wife and I have been travelling abroad for over 50 years, the price is THE PRICE.
I agree, if the change is pennies, then so be it, it can be left.

So many times we have NOT had good service, therefore why support it?

If the owner is too stingy to pay the staff the proper wage, why should we accept it?

Nowadays, I use the web to decide where we will spen our 'hard earned' money.

Rant over.

Regards James

A 15% service charge is by law included in restaurant bills in France - it will say Prix Net or Service Compris at the bottom of the bill, but the owner gets it, not the staff.

The restaurant staff in France will get a proper wage - which may be the minimum wage which also is set by law - currently I believe this is only 10 euros per hour, roughly £8.50

I think some of the responses on here sound rather mean to me .

I am completely with those who disagree with tipping. I think it is an outdated and demeaning practice and I would also like to see it outlawed everywhere.

The price advertised should be what you pay. Do we tip bus drivers, shop assistants, or anyone else who serves us? If not, why not? Why some but not others? Nobody ever tipped me when I drove a bus or a train, and I certainly didn't expect it, despite the fact that I always did my best to give my passengers a safe, smooth, comfortable, and on-time journey, or at least as much as was in my control. I got paid to do my job, as should everyone. Good service should be expected.

Best Regards,
Colin

I will tip if we have received good service, but it is not expected in France or here.
I never received tips when I was an RAF technician or afterwards as a lecturer! Neither did my wife in a long nursing career.Never expected to!
We were paid to do a job, latterly pretty well.
They certainly get annoyed in restaurants and bars in the USA and Canada if you don't tip.
I paid a grumpy barman in Las Vegas the exact money, he was not happy. I told him to try being polite and cheerful. Yes I have worked in a bar myself.
Australian staff did not seem to expect tip either.

That was true in my experience also. I once wrote an article entitled " America welcomes you with open palms" which stirred up quite a debate.

As per my earlier post, the only place we do tip is when we visit South Africa and we tip whether the service is good or bad. It is in your best interest as a bad idea not to tip.
