Due to a new work contract we are now looking at going to France in the first two weeks of September - totally uncharted territory (apart from a week in the Auvergne in October a few years back which was very quiet!).
Appreciate it's hard to generalise but does it start to cool down in Aquitaine/ Dordogne/ Pays de loire by then? Due to my husband's health issues anything above 25deg is a bit much for him - we did Bordeaux in June 2018 at 30ish deg and he didn't enjoy it that much:(
Are most sites still fully open? The issue we found with June was that on some sites the shop/bar/restaurant wasn't open, even if the pool was in use.
We may buy a motorhome this year in which case we will use ASCI, but do prices come down significantly anyway after 1st Sept?
Any recs for nice sites in these areas in Sept appreciated - middle aged couple, no kids, like a drink but not fussed about nightlife! Scenic rural or coastal site is our ideal.
------------- Seeking luxury in unexpected places
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
The ACSI book will tell you which sites are open, and when the discount applies. However in Sept don't rely on all facilities to be open. Places definitely do start to wind down, markets etc.
We usually go to the Cote d'Azur in Sept, and that can be still very warm. Further north, the weather can be like the UK, dampish and cooler. We don't like it too hot either, so avoid June, July and August. The further south you go, the more chance of warm weather.
If you do get a Motorhome then, in my opinion, your options are much wider than if caravanning.
You can use the Aires, France Passion sites and any campsites still open.
We went to France from the middle of September until the middle of October last year and headed down towards the Dordogne river and we stayed on Aires alongside the river.
It was mainly warm, t-shirt and shorts weather, until October when it became a bit cooler and some rain as we headed back north towards Eurotunnel.
If you have your own facilities (toilet, shower), Solar panel and refillable gas system then the World is your lobster - although many of the Aires we've used have toilets on site.
September can be hot - it was very hot on our roof terrace in September 2019 but that's further south. Generally it's probably a little cooler than June but the weather is unreliable these days. I would say less site facilities are open in September than in June - and some sites definitely have an 'end of season' feel.
On the other hand there are less people around, meaning it's easier to get a table in a restaurant, or a seat in a bar, markets are less crowded, and you can visit sites and attractions and sometimes be the only person there.
If you're in a motorhome then you can stay on Aires in towns and villages, which will still be open -
We usually camp from mid July to Mid September ... and, yes, there's a big price drop once you hit September ... even more so with ACSI ...
Most years ending up near the Loire or in the Marais Poitevin ... both in the upper third of the country ...
Weather has been good for 80-90% of the time ... temp in the 20's ...
Motorhome? Well, yes there are the aires ... but often not very nice ... cramped and no facilities ... not much fun for sitting out/relaxing ... though, I'm sure there are exceptions ... but many motorhomes use campsites.
What led us to a caravan choice was the freedom a separate car offered ... especially for touring about ... and towns/cities parking. As ever, the diversity of opinions on this site are marvellous, and you'll get all points of view!
We were in Brantome last September, it was lovely 28 to 30 most days.
One of our favourites, Les Nobis at Montreuil Bellay in Loire is open until end of September. We have stayed a couple of times at that time of the year with lovely weather. It takes ACSI.
There is a aire in the village too newly built.

Have a look at Camping Le Paradis at St Leon sur vezere, fully open all September with activities until the end of the third week.
Acsi accepted for these dates. Can't guarantee weather but last two years about 25c average with some days a bit hotter. This is a truly superb campsite in The Dordogne area on the banks of The Vezere, comes highly recommended.
