We prefer the little & often approach. Wee stop, caffeine intake (from the excellent value bean to cup vending machines) and “En y Vas” - for fuel we come off the auto route for a supermarket for cheaper diesel and buy a sandwich or salad there.

We've done that in the past, but nowadays we prefer to take our time. We still stop briefly every couple of hours for a wee (towing behind us, which is convenient to say the least) and change drivers. However, we usually have dogs with us, so like a longer stop and a more leisurely lunch.
------------- Freedom is a light caravan and an open road.
Many of the picnic tables and benches in aires are constructed in concrete and get a wash (of sorts) every time it rains.
We tend to check the benches as much as the tables, and carry a large tray - easier to wipe clean with an antibacterial wipe than both sides of tablecloth - to prepare our picnic and put cups etc on.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Can’t really see the big issue with this, most of them are concrete tables (would you put your food on a wall and eat off that?), they are crapped on by birds, walked on by kids, squirrels and any other number of wild birds, animals and insects with god knows how many germs that are probably a lot worse than you get off a baby, I have probably even changed my baby on them in the past, I can assure you that nothing disgusting has ever come into contact with the table, would I eat directly off them? No, in the same way I wouldn’t eat directly off the floor.
