Husband is searching for sailings back from Caen, Cherbourg etc in September and can't find anything after September 5th. I can't believe they finish that early do they? It's just for a car rather than a caravan this time.

They only have sailings up to September. You will have to wait until they update. We are waiting to book for December to Spain.

I don't understand the problem. The Brittany Ferries timetables are showing on line up to and including 1 November 2020. If in doubt phone their customer service staff.

We've got a return crossing booked mid-October from Cherbourg to Poole, and have in recent years returned from Caen to Portsmouth in late October and early November so the ferries definitely run.
However, the Fast-craft crossing from Cherbourg to Portsmouth does finish early-mid September each year, so maybe that is what the OP is finding.

If you are a member, phone the Caravan & Motorhome Club Overseas holiday department. We got a fab deal through them. The Brittany Ferries direct price was just over £400 but we got the same dates and times through the CMC for just under £250

Thank you all - worth knowing that they may release more dates later. We have used the fast-craft but he was also looking at the others.
His latest wheeze is to consider travelling over via Portsmouth-Bilbao and then driving up to our eventual target of the Dordogne via San Sebastian, Biarritz and Bordeaux. Cost-wise there doesn't seem a massive difference when you factor in fuel, tolls and stopovers (bear in mind stop overs will be €60-100 in a chambre d'hote rather than the €13 we paid at a lovely municipal when we had our caravan!) Still CMC members Pixie Hez so all definitely look.
Any advice on this route, other than it could be choppy!
Return will be le Havre- portsmouth or Caen-Portsmouth if we can get it.

Three sailings a week to Bilbao in September- either with one night on board or two. I will be surprised if the C&MC price will be better than using a 10% code borrowed from someone on here.

Two to three sailings a day are available on the Brittany Ferries website. Timetable here. Tp go beyond September click the blue arrow to the right. You then have to click on the month to get that months sailings. Not the most intuitive graphics!

Return will be le Havre- portsmouth or Caen-Portsmouth if we can get it.
We live in the Dordogne. We use Portsmouth - Caen both ways. Approx 400 miles in 7.5 hours - if we overnight to Caen we can be at our house mid afternoon comfortably.
Similarly we catch the 11pm sailing back to Portsmouth 3 or 4 times year - set off from home about 2 pm.
You can break the journey overnight both ways (eg Loire going up) but although I'm mid 60's I feel the drive is well within my capabilities for now - the motorways are usually pretty empty outside July/August.
The 200 miles from Portsmouth up to Sheffield is far more stressful!
