Hi everyone, we’re thinking of going to Lake Annecy end of August/beginning of September this year (fingers crossed) and looking at using our ACSI card. Just wondering if it’s possible to just turn up, or is it a really busy area and we’d struggle to find anywhere without booking. One person has already suggested that I will need to book, but just wanted more advice before we decide what to do. Many thanks.

We managed to get a pitch just turning up in August. The first place we tried was full, the second one had space. I would think you could just turn up but if you have a specific site in mind, it might be best to book.

Yes, it's normally a busy area but how Coronavirus will affect things this year I don't know. But there are so many campsites in the area (and many others which aren't in ACSI) you will surely get a space somewhere though it might not be at your first choice. I would take a phone and ring around when you are in the area.

Thank you Netherton and Lizzie, for the info. Straight after posting this, I read about the possibility of France being taken off the list of exempt countries. Now to just wait and see if we can actually go! Once we’re there, we’re there and it will be a chance we have to take!

Try camping La Ravoire Down at Doussard. It takes the Acsi card and is a nice site with a pool and close to the cycle path down into Annecy so if you have bikes take them.
It's the bottom end of the lake so probably about 10 miles into Annecy itself.
I would think end of August this year will be a lot quieter than usual but I would ring them the day before you set off to see if they have space, if not there is a site at the other side of the road which is actually on the lake but a lot bigger site and also sites right up the lakeside on the way into Annecy so as others have said there is a lot to choose from.

We went there on spec at end of August 3 years ago. We found plenty of sites had spaces so just travelled along and around the lake until we found one we fancied. Pitches were more generous the further out from Annecy itself. It's a busy area but you shouldn't struggle to find a pitch on a decent site at that time of year so I wouldn't book in advance. Some sites that looked great online seemed a bit cramped in reality. Better to give yourself the option of moving along if the first site or two don't suit.

Unless you have a particular site or location in mind or have a particularly large outfit requiring a very large pitch, or you want the security of knowing exactly where you're heading for.

lidds0 maybe a stupid question, but we’ve never just turned up before, what do you do? Does your OH stay with your outfit whilst you go and have a quick reccy?

We park up outside, go to reception and ask if any pitches are available. They usually ask the maximum length of proposed stay (but don't hold you to this - it's not a booking), then usually give us a site map with available pitches marked on. We then have a look, choose a pitch (if we want to stay) so go and notify reception. If we don't like what's on offer we just move on.

There are loads of sites in and around Annecy, so lots of choice out of high season.

We have always just turned up but that was in early September so out of season. What I would say is the traffic into and out of Anency is horrendous so if you have bikes I would take them as there is a fabulous cycle path (more like a road) that takes you into Annecy.
