Nationwide and a couple of others I have tried do not cover people with stents however Nationwide will cover Bypass patients but not if stented previously.
Strange, as I had a stent fitted in 2007, declared it to Nationwide, and received cover.
Is this a new thing please ?
Hi Jim
I don't know if its new, Nationwide's insurers are one of three I tried to get cover with who refused because of stents, after about 3 attempts to find out why some people on the forums tell me they have been covered with no problems I finally got told by their insurers that they are a low risk company and people are mistaken as they definitely dont cover people with stents.
They said they would give insurance cover but stenting and any problems arising would be excluded I have asked people on here and other forums who say they are covered to recheck and let people know on here if they are definitely covered but no one has comeback on that.
The lady in their branch said I would be covered for an extra charge it was only when filling in the online form for the insurance there was a bit I wasn't certain of so phoned the number they give for online help that was when I was told that stents were a no no as I said I have tried to argu it but have failed to get any change.
I haven't wasted time on it since because it seemed highly unlikely we would be able to go abroad anyway.
So if I were you Jim I would double check with their insurers and not branch staff and if you are covered could you come back to this post and let us know
Every time I have renewed I have had to ring their insurer direct and speak to their agent, who runs through all the ailments covered comprehensively, they ask for any changes or additions future possible medical procedures any interventions in the preceding years and medications there was never any uncertainty about cover left to chance the only way would be not to declare any previous surgery etc, the N/W branch weren't involved at all.

I only involved the branch to ask if with all my med problems would I be covered under their flexi plus if we changed our normal account and was told yes for extra payment, it was when I contacted their insurers I was told no stents.
So are you saying Saxo that you have stents and are covered or you have declared it and they are excluded that from your cover, what I am trying to establish is why many on the forums say they are covered for stenting and the company is categorically telling me their not because they are a low risk company and don't, I'm not saying you or anyone else is wrong just trying to get to the bottom of it.
I have not seen their full T&C as I was told no point in completing the form because of stents and they would not cover that aspect even for more payment.
No,what I am saying is that if you have stents fitted then there can be no doubt as to whether you are covered or not because you would have to declare them when questioned by the insurer and if you were covered it would be included in the list of medical conditions covered.
You cant just open a Flexplus Acc and get medical cover for any conditions, you would have to speak to the insurance co to declare any existing conditions you require cover for,if any other people on forums are saying they are covered then it must say so on their certificate there can be no doubt.

Thanks Saxo now I understand what you mean, maybe I should just fill out the online form completely and see what happens then hope it goes through, I have not tried recently because no point with the present rules on travel and having had the same response from two other companies regarding stents I had made up my mind not to bother with travel insurance.
My breakdown cover on the vehicle covers repatriation due to illness and the GHIC covers anything else including stents the only thing not covered then is trip cancellation.

Many thanks for your reply.
Admittedly, it is two years since we travelled abroad, and we have let the NW+ travel insurance lapse, but we did it over the phone to the insurers, and I declared the stent and we obtained cover, but I will double check when, and if, we travel abroad again.

If I get refused again Manty will you pm me your policy number so I can get to the bottom of why the apparent different information from Nationwide's insurers so I can prove that they are covering people with stents.
I filled in the online form this morning and when I got to the end and pressed submit a nice little red box came up with the message to please phone them as they needed to discuss some of the form answers, How much do you bet its about those damned stents
