Hi all,
I'm hoping to travel to Spain next year with the caravan. Hoping to catch some good weather and have been looking at Lloret de Mar. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on driving through Spain rather than France, I've never driven in Europe at all, and I've not been overly comfortable towing but after covering most of the Derbyshire hills and driving down to Newquay recently I'm feeling much better about it.
I know its a longer trip on the ferry but a much shorter drive at the other end if I go through Spain. What are your thoughts/advice?

After driving in the UK, driving on the continent is a doddle: far less traffic in most place.

At any junction, where you have no traffic to follow, consciously tell your self to "drive on the right".
Far too easy to drift into automatic pilot and end up facing on-coming traffic.

Also, when leaving a motorway and the sign shows a bend, it means SHARP bend. More like a cork screw at times.

It’s 50/50 choice - some go one way, some the other.

If you are talking of a winter trip and fancy 36 hours across the Bay of Biscay at that time of year then book the ferry to Spain. If you have got dogs then you will probably choose the tunnel. Personally I would go overnight from Portsmouth to St Malo and then it’s an easy 450 mile drive on big flat roads in two days down to the Spanish border - with an overnight at the halfway point near La Rochelle.

Planning for August. We normally go to Zante for the “big” holiday but obviously been impossible recently so been going to Newquay which we do love but our English weather wears thin at times, 25degrees sat on the beach, later that night hanging on to the awning for dear life!!! At one point the wife was selling the caravan.

You'll have to plan ahead places to stop as caravans aren't supposed to use Aires, although I've seen them in the bigger ones a couple of times.
If you join ACSI you should have options and you don't have to book ahead out of peak season.

36 hours I don�t think so
Portsmouth to Bilbao route is 24 hours on the
Cap Finestere
Portsmouth to Santander route is 30 hours
on the new ship Galicia
Plymouth to Santander route is 20 hours
on the Pont Aven

If you have dogs you can book dog friendly cabins on both the Galicia and the Cap Finestere
