Hi Val A,
What would be the reaction in Carrefour if I produced my paper NHS letter. It has bar codes and qr things on it. Would that be accepted?

In the Carrefour we use you might get in, but might not. I've not seen anyone waving a bit of paper in front of the scanner...... but then I don't spend much time watching! There is, however, a 'holiday letter' in one of the daily papers today suggesting that everyone should have the NHS App if they're going to France, and mentioning incidents where they were refused access with a paper NHS letter. I'm not sure why you're reluctant to use it, because it's not the one which 'pings' you if you are in contact with someone with Covid. It just gives you access to your medical records, your vaccination record, and to request a repeat prescription. However, a compromise might be to take a photo of the QR code on the letter and save that. You could even check it's working by downloading the TAC-Verif App which the French use to check your vaccination status!

But if you're not happy with technology and are willing to risk it if you're not allowed entry, then by all means, stick to your guns and take the paper copy only.

I printed off our QR codes (from the NHS app I requested an e-mail copy) and these have worked everywhere we have been asked for proof, it is the 2nd code you need, the one for your 2nd. jab. I did also download a copy into "files" on my phone but have not had to use it. We have been here for nearly 3 weeks and every campsite has asked to scan our codes, as has all cafes etc. even if sitting on the terrace. I called into a McDonalds for a take-away coffee on the way here and was also asked for it there.

Hi Val A, thanks for the tips. I tried using the french app to read the qr code on my NHS Covid Pass letter but it would not accept it.

So I have bitten the bullet and downloaded the nhs app on my tablet and signed in to get the digital qr code. I've then taken a photo of the qr code on my ancient smart phone and then used the French app on my tablet to scan it into the wallet and it accepted it, so all is good.

The problem I have is that my wife hates anything to do with Big Brother watching over her and so refuses to register with the NHS app and insists on sticking with the letter!!!!

The qr code on the NHS Covid pass letter is tiny and doesnt look anything like the digital one, so I cannot see how a scanner would recognise it.

Anyway, it looks like I'll be doing the shopping in the bigger supermarkets. Let's hope the campsites let her in! After all the French embassy website clearly says that a paper letter is acceptable.

Nothing at all to do with Big Brother - that's the 'Track and Trace' NHS App - which is different. The 'Covid App' doesn't track you, it just shows your status. But she's doing it at her risk, and let's hope it doesn't lead to arguments when you're allowed in somewhere and she isn't! There are increasing reports of paper copies not being accepted, so if you can change her mind.........!

Then she might not be for camping, or shopping, or dining out, but I do hope you manage to have a good holiday.

The dining out and shopping won't be a problem, but I can see us sat in the campervan outside a campsite frantically logging on to the nhs website to register her and download the app. And if I dare say I told you so, guess who'll be sleeping in the awning!!!
