We went over the mountains to Domaine de Massereau, in Sommières, which was quite stunning. On arrival, we had to hand over a passport before we were allowed to view the site (the ACSI card wasn't sufficient, apparently). It was very quiet but we were told only 4 pitches were available to us on ACSI (at the top ACSI rate of €20) and they were, frankly, awful; small, dank, sloping and covered with tree roots. One had 2 different levels and was impossible to pitch on. The pool looked nice but the rest of the place looked a bit scruffy and there was no way we were going to pay a supplement when so many bare and scrubby pitches were empty. They clearly don't want custom at the ACSI rate, despite being barely 1/4 full (if that). Such a huge contrast to the friendly welcome received at Les 2 Vallées, where we'd been invited to choose any pitch we liked.
We then checked out Flower Camping Gajan but it was deserted and looked like they'd shut up shop for the season so we moved on.
Next, we went to a site we've visited before: Camping Campéole L'Ile des Papes, near Avignon. We arrived at 3pm, found reception was closed until 3:30pm, then saw the notice: 'Swimming Pool Closed'. It was 27 degrees, so we moved on again.
We've already been to Monplaisir some years ago. As were hoping to use an ACSI site, we decided not to go there.
Next, we went to a smaller site in Châteaurenard called Camping La Roquette. After negotiating the manic traffic through Avignon we were ready to stop, but the pitches were small and cramped and the whole site felt a bit claustrophobic, so we decided to press on again and head for a site we know and like in Roquebrune.
It was a long day but we always enjoy the travelling and view it as part of the holiday.
It just goes to show how site preferences vary, but I'm still very grateful for all the recommendations and that we've had opportunity to have a look at some sites we haven't visited before, so thank you all for your recommendations.
We hope to check out the other site recommendations on our way north.
Thanks again.

If you are looking in the Sommieres area, we always use the (ex?) municipal La Garanel, which is right in the town centre. Once here, you don't really need to use your car as you can walk to the supermarkets, along the river, through the old town centre, round the market.
It's not in the ACSI book, but similar price out of season. I looed at the website, they seem to be closed as 2nd Oct, but might be worth thinking about another time if you're not happy with the alternatives.
My reviews are on here.
We saw signs for the municipal and very nearly went there - I wish we had, now!
Next time...

We looked in at this site but it was so cramped we went just up the voie verte, past Domaine de massereau to Junas. A couple of nice and cheap ACSI sites in the village

Another vote for the municipal site, stayed there a few years ago, brilliant. While there we went on a bike ride past Le Massereau, it seemed very dark and depressing, nothing but trees, we were glad we hadn't gone there ,as it was a toss-up at the time between the two. And the municipal was cheaper 👍
