We are due on the ferry to Santander on 23rd Nov and yesterday decided to book our dog in to our vet for the AHC. Much to our surprise they said that they were not doing this service as they are short of vets. Asked if they could recommend anywhere and they said just phone around local vets. Tried a couple of local vets but they were not taking on any more clients. Then we tried Vets for Pets and they could not have been more helpful and Rue now booked in for AHC on 16th Nov. We had been with previous vet for nearly 20 years but they didn't seem bothered! The point we are making is not to leave booking your AHC to the last minute!!

On another matter Rue's normal booster jab runs out in January when we are in Spain so does he need them to get back into the UK?

Can Vets for Pets do the booster jab for your dog at the same time as the animal health certificate.?

You need an Animal Health Certificate issued by a vet no more than ten days before you enter Europe as the pet passport is no longer valid for entry into the EU. You can however use the pet passport to return to the UK. We checked online prices and they ranged from £80 to £180. Vets for Pets charge £80.

You need to get the AHC if your pet currently has a U.K. issued pet passport, or none at all. An up to date EU issued pet passport is still valid.

They can. My dog was due her rabies booster in November but she had it in October because I’m going to try to get her a Portuguese passport in the new year and she’ll probably have to have another one then. I didn’t want them so close together.

You don’t have to wait three years. In Europe they give dogs rabies boosters every twelve months.

I thought it was the normal booster the OP was talking about.

With normal booster injections, there is usually a "grace" period if you are a bit late (during Covid lockdown, it was at least 3 months), so it depends when you are due to come back - best speak to your vet whether it is better to have them early or late. There is no requirement to show evidence of the normal booster injections on leaving or returning to the U.K. but obviously good practice to have them up to date so that your dog is protected. Also if you are too late with the boosters you may have to start the vaccination process again.

You would need to start the vaccine process from scratch, our vet only gives a month and then you would start again.

My vet will allow you to go 2 months pass the date for a booster, Vets in my opinion are just out to make money from us .Thats why I use the Animal Trust you never pay for a consultation only treatment and any medication your pet might need .
