Hi,
Looking to return to the sunny French Med after a couple of cold years in the UK! For a number of reasons I am interested in staying in a ready pitched tent and wondered if anyone has any recommendations. I would like a site with a pool, walking distance from the beach (1km ish) and bread and pastries in the morning, but other than that I don't mind. I would quite like to be based in / walking distance to a town.

I've seen some suitable campsites at Valras Plage and Serignan Plage. The campsites have a lot of facilities but I was wondering about the towns themselves - it doesn't look like there's much apart from the campsites. Can anyone enlighten me as to whether there are restaurants, interesting walks etc at either of those destinations?

Thanks.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the campsite area of Serignan Plage, and in Serignan itself. Serignant itself is a drive away though, but I'm sure the campsite area will have boulangerie, or the campsite will supply morning bread and croissants. Valras Plage is quite a sizeable resort. It's a flat area, on the edges of the Languedoc Plain. Some people love it around there, others hate it.

Tell me where else you've been along the Mediterranean, and liked, and I'll try and match them. (Forty odd years of French camping/caravanning)!

I'm not sure which companies you are looking for, but check out Roan Holidays too - as outside peak season they sometimes have some absolutely cracking deals. Edit - they don't seem to offer tents any more, just mobile homes, but at some good prices - from £393 for two weeks in late May 2022.

Tents are going to be hot in that climate. You might better in a cabin or chalet with open windows and fans. Most campsites on the Med have that sort of accommodation. And as for a town on the French Med coast our own favourite was Cavalaire, but that’s nowhere near the ones you mentioned.

Thanks for the replies.

Netherton, I have camped several times in the area and more than happy with a hot tent :-) I have spent two years being cold in bricks and motor in the UK, so actually really want a hot, sweaty tent!! Mobile homes are a bit more than I want to pay, but if I am going to lug my own camping stuff to the site then I need to replace my ageing car! Cavalier looks nice, I shall do some research.

I am open to pretty much anywhere along the Med, but probably not too close to Spain because I have stayed down there before and it's a long way to any days trips that aren't in the mountains eg Pont du Gard.

Val, we have school age kids so great off season bargains are not for us. We stayed in Sainte Marie la Mer previously which has a busy seafront and a marina as well as the old village in walking distance. We all like being by the sea but I am the main swimmer in the family, hence the desire for a pool, but waterparks and beaches don't hold my kids attention for long enough :-(

If you liked the Sainte Marie area, have a look at Le Barcarès.

Especially Camping l'Oasis Near sea and has a ginormous swimming pool

We've stayed in Cavalaire - and it is nice. More laid back than some of the resorts along that coast. Plenty of campsites offering their own rental tents, too, rather than through the (usually) more expensive 'camping tour operators' such as Eurocamp, etc.

Have a look, too, at the campsites around Grau du Roi - a busy area, again with lots of sites offering rentals. Usually walking distance into the town area - and easy access to the Pont du Gard, Avignon, the Camargue, etc.

When our children were small - up to teenage years, we always did this kind of holiday. We used Eurocamp, but there are (were?) plenty of others . I suggest that you look on their web pages and see where they offer.

Hi. Thanks for all the suggestions- all very good ideas. Looking like it will be Grau du Roi, but I'm not sure I want to stay somewhere I can't pronounce :-)

I know how it should be pronounced but just can't get get my tongue round Roi. Same reason I say I’m from England not the United Kingdom! I'd never get a job presenting the Eurovision Song Contest!

When my sons were small, they used to pronounce it Groo de Roo (don't askk me why) - and we all started to call it that. They loved the place!

If you area around Grau du roi at the end of August, look out for the running of the bulls through the town.

We were on a bend in the road as they came through. The best laxative we found all year!

It's too long since we were there as caravanners that I would hesitate to recommend anywhere. Years ago we used to love Le Boucanet, which is just out of town, and had a lovely beachside setting, but the last time we went we were bitterly disappointed to find it had all mobile homes along the beachside pitches and poor reviews about the toilet blocks. La Marine is used by Canvas Holidays and they tend to pick decent sites, but I haven't stayed there.

We do go back to Le Grau du Roi almost every year to eat at a particular restaurant there, where the Maitre D has been the same guy since we first started doing there when my children were 9 and 3!! However, again we haven't been back for two years because of Covid19.

Somehow it seems to have remained somewhere which is slightly off the radar for most UK campers and caravanners, and there aren't a lot of UK reviews of any of the sites there.
