I know that the rules have changed with regards to the foods we can take to Europe. Pre-Brexit, we would use an overnight ferry and take a picnic breakfast and lunch for that first day. It was cheaper (for a family of 5), we'd often not want to eat something so very early, or rush it because of disembarkation.

So, we are still able to take some things for breakfast- rolls and little boxes of cereal. Am I right in thinking that if we were to take milk for tea, and cheese for the rolls, provided they were eaten before we disembarked then this is ok?

I know it's unlikely to be checked but I do tend to stick to the rules!

Going onto the ferry you can take what you want - it's going through customs in France that will be the issue.

We used to take hard boiled eggs and smoked ham for our breakfast rolls. Hard boiled eggs would still be allowed but not the ham.

Take oat milk for your tea & peanut butter for your sarnies in France. Eat your meat & dairy for brekkie on the ferry. You could stop at a supermarket once you arrive though. Most are now open Sunday mornings & generally plenty of room to park with caravan at back of car park.

Our ferry arrives at 0630 so that a 0530 alarm call at the latest and some time before we would be wanting to eat.
Appreciate with 5 its more costly, but we will just stop after a couple of hours driving and have brekkie then.

Not going to happen. Even truck drivers now taking regular food through. It�s almost as if some people don�t have enough to worry about in life, so FIND stuff to be concerned about.

Have recently been to Santander on the ferry with sandwiches etc. There is no checking, except on the way back, in case anyone is hiding in the van or motor home.,

Same for us. The import regulations really aren't designed to catch the odd holidaymaker taking his sandwiches and flask for a picnic (despite the headlines in the Sun newspaper) but are intended for regulations to importers of large amounts of goods. Whilst it isn't a good idea to fill up the caravan with sausages and milk, we have never even been asked if we are carrying 'banned' goods, and not been searched in our recent trips - last one in April/early May 2022.

No, not at the UK border, and there are no customs between France and Spain. Occasionally you will see the Douanes on the roadside, but they are interested in drugs and tobacco, not whether you have a pack of bacon in your caravan fridge.

We'll be taking egg mayonnaise rolls, crisps and cold drinks to consume in the tunnel and stock up at a convenient supermarket when we need to... but that's us!

In the end, we did take some milk and sliced cheese as 'contraband' to the Netherlands, (other items were allowed) and we weren't stopped or questioned. Had we been, then of course we would have had those things confiscated and I accepted that. I do agree that there is a difference perhaps between a few items for personal use and selling on/taking 2 weeks worth. We're heading to France for the summer and I would probably do the same again, but accept that the items could be taken.

Thank goodness we could bring a few delicious items back though!

We hid a small uht milk away, then I found that oh had put another in the fridge plus an opened box of spread. No one asked or looked, I think the English passport control asked if we were vaxxed. Anyway they won’t come back with us, taking the space of 2 bottles of wine.

I agree, and read a hilarious post the other day: "Soon some worrier will start a post asking 'Will I have to empty my bowels if I ate a pork pie on the ferry'?"
