We're doing the Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry. We arrive in Bilbao 8.30am and are going straight in to France (we won't be going back to Spain). We have the new number plate showing UK and the Union Jack. but I understand that when driving in France we also need a separate UK sticker. Is it OK to just put one on the caravan? or do we also need to put one on the car? We won't be unhitching until we arrive at our French campsite.

we have just put a Union flag GB sticker over the EU GB on the number plate, both on the car and the caravan. No problems...so far. No need for big ugly GB roundels
This is from Brittany Ferries
From 28 September 2021, you must identify that your vehicle is from the UK when driving abroad. If your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker to drive in France.
I took a look at the Eurotunnel information too and they say the same thing (albeit worded differently of course)
We have a motorhome and have just stuck new stickers with U.K. over the GB on our number plates. We used to had a large oval GB sticker too but have removed it and will not be replacing it with a new U.K. one.

I am sure you need to have `UK` instead of `GB` now.

Sorry, I worded my post incorrectly. It was meant to read when driving in Spain I understand you need a uk sticker on your caravan......do you also need one on your car even if you're only driving from Bilbao into France then staying in France for the rest of our holiday?

Law for Spain is UK stickers not just number plate identifiers so you need one on both. You can get magnetic sticker for car. If you want to easily remove sticker from caravan afterwards then put some Vaseline on the sticky side. You only need separate UK stickers for Spain. France is ok with just the UK number plates. Ukraine is UA.
