Hi, we're staying at camping salata in roses this August 2 adults and 2 teenagers.
Just looking at routes, we really want to avoid Paris. Looking at 1st stopover between Troyes and Langres. 2nd stop nimes/ remoulins.
Return route 1st stop Lyon/Macon , 2nd stop approx 1and half hours from Calsis close to the A26.
Does this sound about right?
Sorry for the long post 🙂

Your suggested route is fine although expensive on tolls. Many people would pass Paris on the other side going via Rouen to a first overnight at Orleans, then a second overnight somewhere like St Flour - as that route has a long stretch of toll free motorway. But either way you need an early start from Calais - where are you starting from in UK and what time are you crossing the channel?

Done this loads of times. My advice is late crossing, o/n aire baie de Somme, Rouen, evreux, dreux, A71, o/n near clermont ferrand then roll into roses via Perpignan. Easy.

Are you a motorhome or a caravan?

I would also suggest going vis the Rouen route, then going south from there

Hi, thank you all for your replies.
We're travelling in a motorhome, I,'ve looked at the Rouen route avoiding Paris but this would add 4 hrs in to our journey.
We're travelling from Dover early Friday morning.

(I think you might have done something wrong in the route planning as I've just done a very quick and simple route and going via rouen adds only an extra 40 mins)

Can I ask what speed you will be doing on the continent?

Assuming you are under 3.5T, will you be doing the max 70/80 mph on the toll roads and hang the expense od diesel and toll road costs or the most frugal, 56mph.

Also, what age/power is your motorhome?

Is it new/powerful can climb up everest if you want it to, or, like us does it need a bit of TLC getting up the stairs these days :-)

No way - unless you've looked at most of the route from Rouen to Perpignan avoiding motorways.

Plus the A6 (Dijon / Lyon etc) in August is hugely busy as half of Paris heads to the Med.

(We've 30 plus years of holidaying in France and lived here for the last 4.)

Yes I'd taken motorway off no wonder 4hrs!
Now showing under 1hr difference and hardly anything in miles and tolls.
We've been through Rouen a number of times to get to the Vendee. Would you say Lyon is busier?
Looks like cancelling overnight sites and starting again.

Lyon is hugely more busy than the Rouen route. It's about twenty-odd years since we chose to do that route, just because of the traffic. If you can avoid it, then do. The more western route is probably quicker, over-all, if you take off the time spent queueing to get through toll gates on the Rhone Valley route.

Thank you, I've paid small deposits on 2 sites on the way down and 1 near calasis on the way back. Now tempted to cancel and do the Rouen route, especially coming back from Spain as it will be 13th and 14th August so the run up to the French Bank holiday 🤪
