Can anyone recommend a site for September near or on Lake Maggiore where (1) you are not packed in like sardines (2) the site fees are "reasonable" and (3)you can walk to a small village or town.

Many years ago we stayed at Camping Conca D'Oro, Via 42 Martiri, 26-28835 Feriolo di Baveno which would probably meet most of your requirements.
