Just heard on BBC news that the Gironde in France is on fire.
This area of long sandy beaches backed by dunes and pine forests has many good campsites. I've walked this coast and know how hot and dry the pine forests become.
The city of Bordeaux and many of the world's best vineyards are there.
Stay away, go to Brittany instead.

Its been burning for a week,so far roughly 13,000 hectares has burnt.

Less than half of one percent of SW France is on fire although reading some of the UK press you'd think the entire area is an inferno.

off to Pays Basque next Wednesday, all looks good, can only speculate uk press is scaremongering, I have given up watching UK tv, I stick with the French tv now.

No probs at Montalivet so far. All is normal. There was a forest fire nr Vensac about 10 miles from us last night but it has been put out now. A campsite a mile away from fire was evacuated.

We have been here a fortnight & are leaving tomorrow for Dordogne mostly because my wallet can only stand a fortnight at peak season on coast. Weather has been perfect. A bit cooler today.

If you are going to area check website of the local Sudouest newspaper for accurate info on fires. https://www.sudouest.fr/

Those scenes are awful.

If it's any help to those due to travel to the area I've just read on this The Local France, an English language news site.

“The fire reached the coast at Dune de Pilat. At least 5 campsites are 90% destroyed according to local fire chief Prefet Fabienne Buccio. The campsites are Foret du Pilat, La Dune, Pyla Camping, La Petit Nice, Yellow Village Panorama du Pyla.2 Also "Bordeaux, 60 km away is engulfed in thick smog".

I bet the 6,000 campers wouldn’t agree about the “scaremongering”. But fires are only happening in part of France (and Spain & Greece…), like the 40deg heat isn’t happening everywhere in UK.

It’s turning into a very serious problem.
There are now 3 areas on fire,thousands of hectares are burning and so far nearly 40,000 people have been evacuated,you can smell the smoke as far north as Nantes.
No rain is forecast for the near future(2 weeks). Farmers are wetting down with water filled slurry tankers to try to slow the advance.

6000 is only a very small amount of holiday makers in France at the moment, agreed it is not good for them, but i am afaid the british press do like to esculate on what is happening. toilet rolls comes to mind!!

38,500 people have now been evacuated from the areas of the fires, and Emile Macron made a visit today. I think that suggests that it's not just the UK press 'escalating' the issue.

We drove from Montalivet yesterday through the forests to Bordeaux & then across to nr Montpon in Dordogneshire. No smoke visible. Outside the immediate areas of fire everything is normal & packed with campers.

Obviously a fire could start anywhere in the area but it is not putting campers off. The sites are all rammed & getting busier. I suppose because this is first “normal” summer for 3yrs. Got too crowded for us so now at a Dordogne site with much bigger pitches.
