We used to be young......and do long journeys. Now we only drive 2-3 hours before stopping at a campsite, as much to enjoy the site/village/town as well as having a break.
Our drive to the Tunnel is a whole day, we don't do that any more either.

I can understand not wanting to put tenty up. We previously had a smallish tent and became adept at putting it up quickly. Now with the 'van of course, you just park up. Some people carry a tiny tenty for odd overnighters. Doesn't take up a lot of space, and you have everything else.
Try it this time, see how you get on. You might say 'never again' but at least you will know.

So you are going to Erquy. It’s a 337mile drive to get there from Calais but only 29 miles from St Malo ferryport. I know which I would choose.

I must say, I would rather drive 100 miles in France, than 10 miles here.

I know what you're saying and, yes, I agree that drivability-wise, catching the ferry to either St. Malo or Cherbourg does make more sense but coupled with the fact that Mrs Breath doesn't do so good on the water and the availability of crossings along with seeing more of France on the drive as opposed to a vast expanse of water for much of the duration on a ferry crossing. Although I may just look at it again before I book the tickets 🤔

We go Poole - Cherbourg. Ferry leaves 8.30am arrives in France 2pm
you can sleep on the port in the lanes in your vehicle - possibly better for motorhomes and caravans. Get a good breakfast on the Ferry then you are ready for a good drive through France
