Thanks for the app suggestion MorePints, it will definitely help narrow our search a bit. Husband who does the towing blanched when I suggested the Ardeche 😂
Absolutely get hubby to take you to the Ardeche.....! It is absolutely beautiful. Our kids (not kids anymore!) loved swimming in the lakes and rivers; amazing locations to visit to walk and cycle, fantastic villages to visit. The Caravan Club book at Les Ranchisses. We do it with one overnight stop from Calais. And it is definitely worth the trek.
We went to the Ardeche (different site) for the first time when my son was four, and loved it. We went back regularly with my sons, and even celebrated A levels finishing with both sons, and five others who joined us on site. We now store our caravan on a site in the Ardeche, and next week are meeting our son (now forty-one) and his family. They are using our caravan, and we are taking a large tent. (Our choice).
On my opinion it's well worth the distance - we did it in April this year with an overnight stop near Chartres.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

Thank you to all with your great suggestions lots to go on here. Luckily researching holidays is one of my favourite hobbies. Teenager likes anything sporty, football, mountain biking, kayak etc. I like to be by the sea but it’s not a “must have”.
I agree with you Jimff5 have never found a bit that we didn’t enjoy.

With good reason.
During July & August a weekend journey to/from the Ardeche could well take double the 6/7 hours "target distance" as per your first post.
This might be useful as it shows the days with heaviest traffic for this summer so you'll be able to work out days to avoid next year.
Visiting the Dordogne for the first time last year we were taken by how much there is to do for kids, so you might want to consider it again.
However, have you considered the Loire - fairly similar and lots of attractions as well as the obvious educational value and wow factor of the Chateaux!
You say you've been to Brittany, but again there may be more to see - gulf of Morbihan is worth a week on its own.

Hi Val,
Not wishing to hijack the OP, but what site near Chartres please?
Started looking for next year...
