There is recent info on Camper Contacr website saying daytime parking is OK but the parking area closes at 9 pm. and that overnight parking is no longer allowed.
There is a paid for aire in the town opposite the municipal campsite, and a free no facilities aire along the seafront at Sangatte.

We no longer stop anywhere near Calais in the MH since we managed to pick up a hitchhiker a couple of years ago....we literally turned our backs for a couple of minutes and he managed to slip in via the passenger door and then hid in the shower. We didn't hear or notice a thing until a few miles later when he realised we were heading south (at which point we stopped and let him out on the hard shoulder). We do still stop for fuel in the area but one of us stays inside with all the doors locked.
I've also heard stories of them climbing onto bike racks or lashing themselves to the chassis - which is not only dangerous, but there's also the potential for them to cause damage to the MH in the process. For me the risks are just too high.

I have heard of people discovering their gas bottles missing, and the space occupied by a 'hitch hiker'
