We had a booked holiday with the caravan to the Swiss Alps and French Alps booked for last week of August and first two weeks September.
Due to a family bereavement , we had to cancel the holiday about a week before leaving for the holiday.
We were able to get the ferry booking postponed awaiting a later date, but the sites we were due to stay at close by end September and they cant carry the bookings over for a later date, so in most cases have lost the money paid.
We would still really like to do a European break with the caravan , but struggling to find somewhere we can go leaving beginning of October for about 3 weeks?
I had looked for some sites in South of France and Italy as a possibility (Bella Italia) being one that should still be open. However the problem we have is the overnight stops en route.
We originally had 2 overnight stops planned for Switzerland, it seems the journey down from Calais appears to be very little site availability? The sites we normally use when heading South are closed in October and we don’t want to stay in aires, particularly in late season where there would be very little other occupancy.
Can anyone offer any suggestions, it doesn't really matter which country we head for being so late in the season and it means if we can use the Dover Calais route we wont lose the Ferry costs we paid. We would aim to leave beginning of October for 2-3 weeks dependant on where we are heading,
It has been suggested we look for a UK break, which if needs to we will, however we have been doing UK breaks since last year and would like a change.
Thanks for any suggestions from anyone that has done a European break in October?

You just need your ACSI card. We are in France now, about to go to Spain. Some sites are busy, but plenty of space, we never book in advance. Came over 1st September Portsmouth to Cherbourg, first night La Flèche, nice, near town, swimming pool 14 euros, then Camping Montreal at St Germain les Belles, lakeside camping open all year 16 euros. Now at le Soleil Argeles-sur-mer 5* site 24euros but closes next week, plenty of others around though with lots of availability.
