Well P& O prices are insane but we work hard for it, so we splash out.
We tend to go east in France, so Metz and down to Provence...or across towards Annecy.
We did France for 23 years.
I need some inspiration for next year.
Ardeche, Swiss Alps...who knows.
As long as I can walk, run or SUP I'm happy.
Neither of us are sun bunnies so the coast is out.

Switzerland definitely, we cant get enough of Brienz / Interlaken area and try to visit at some point in our holidays every 2-3 years.
We are going to the Ardeche this year on a separate trip , again lovely area.
Late summer to the `South of France and Switzerland stopping at Lake Annecy for a week.
All these areas are amazing.

Finally settled on an old favourite; Le Tedey, Aquitaine.
No mountains but a beautiful site and great SUP water...calm, warm, scenic.
Not a sight seeing area but we'll fill the days 'paddling', cycling.

BobCat10 have you 'done' the Gorge du Verdon. It suits your brief perfectly with the most fantastic scenery and quaint villages, markets, and mountains, but there is also the Lac de St Croix for paddle boarding. There are some great sites, and it's interesting that out of all the suggestions offered you've chosen to go back to one of the flattest areas of France.
We shall be in the Ardeche with our family and I know that's on your radar for another year. Again it meets your brief perfectly with lovely little villages like Labeaume, Vogue, Balazuc, Banne and many others.
Stand up Paddle Boarding. I know people on the campsite where we store our caravan often paddle board on the Chassezac at the bottom of the site. We shall be there in late July into early August with our family. Great markets in Vallon (Thursday), Ruoms (Friday) Les Vans and Aubenas on Saturday. Cycle routes Voie Verte from Grospierres to Vogue and another more in the northern part of the Ardeche.

Not long now, let's hope the weather is kind. We sail Hull to Rotterdam, so it's a bit further to reach familiar territory.
Its 12yrs since we were in Dissay sous Courcillon for a stop over.
We head for Lacanau on the Saturday. I reckon we'll 'eat' the miles on this leg of the journey as we visited a number of times in the early 2000's.
We've down sized the tent and will be taking more sports gear, although we're going to hire bikes...the theory being we'll be out on the water instead. We've covered every cycle route in the district over time.
Counting the weeks now.
I see that our usual Italian spot has experienced early storms, so France is a good choice.

Hope you have a good one BobCat!
Verdun, as per Val's suggestion, may be very good for you ... the river and Gorge is only part of the deal ... it feeds into a chain of lakes with many sites around ... so the combination may appeal ... worth researching a bit? There's also the are above the Gorge ...
Enjoy Le Tedey!
