Two bits of good news for those of us travelling from Ireland direct to the continent :

Brittany Ferries have put a new bigger cruise ferry on their Rosslare - Bilbao route
It's good that this route is getting a new ferry, hopefully it means this is a route thats here to stay.

Stena are adding an extra ship to their Rosslare - Cherbourg route
And hopefully this will lead to a bit of competition between Stena and Irish Ferries to Cherbourg.

More capacity all round is a good thing

Living in Scotland, this sounds like a viable alternative to the English Channel routes, that’s worth keeping in mind.

A bigger Stena ferry would be nice, not much comfort on the Horizan. Cabins a good size though.

Hi Arthur , Question for you and i know it will be a guesstimate. How much would it cost to go France- Ireland with a Camper return say around End of August. Or roughly how much you would pay towing a van.
Cheers

Hi Mick, pre-covid it varied from around 600 euro return in May / Sep to around 1200 euro in July / Aug for a car, 2 people, a caravan and a simple (ie cheapest) bunk. You can cut that down by one or two hundred euro by sleeping in chairs instead of a bunk, although I much prefer the comfort of my own bunk. Each trip is priced on its own so the end of Aug return would be cheaper than the beginning of Aug outward. Also midweek tends to be cheaper to weekend to an extent.
Post-covid I haven't travelled outside Ireland so I'm not sure, I assume like everything else on the planet it's gone up, but no idea by how much.
Usually the prices are on the Irish Ferries website beginning of Jan so you can get a more exact figure then. One other thing to note, Irish Ferries now go from Cherbourg to Dublin, but Stena and Brittany Ferries still use Rosslare.
Price-wise, usually Irish Ferries < Stena < Brittany Ferries but again in this topsy turvy world its probably best to check them all.

Hmm! Less than 2 hour drive to Cairnryan, 3 hour ferry to N Ireland, a bit over 2 hours drive to Dublin, ferry… Thanks for that thought! it might well cost more but it’s more appealing than a long drive on busy roads to the Channel ports.

Having looked at this before from Ayrshire it is severely cost restrictive.

Although it is a slightly longer drive to Eurotunnel / Ferry it is by far the cheaper route.

Of course it might suit some from Scotland, but not us.

It's a shame there isn't a route from Rosyth to France / Rotterdam / Denmark anymore. If there was one to Netherlands or Scandinavia we would certainly use it.

DFDS are doing a ferry from Rosslare to Dunkirk. Not sure of prices as website is not very transparent.

From April 2023, a ferry will operate between Rosyth - a small port 40 minutes from Edinburgh - to Zeebrugge, on Belgium's northern coast. The route carried passenger services until 2010, and freight until 2018 but it was shut down by a fire onboard one of the ships. The new route will primarily be used for freight.

There is the thought that if the route is successful that passenger traffic will be added.

I did look at this before when it was running, one word on the cost, frightening!
