For me, i have 2 school age children and our 2 weeks in august are already set with my wifes work. unfortunately they fall on one week of the french 'factory fortnight'.

we were undecided whether to go to the west coast of france as we always do or to the eastern side for a change.

i like to ensure the best kind of campsite for my kids with waterslides etc because i only get 23days holiday from work and for the 2 weeks we can get away with them i want it to be perfect....anyway we were dicsussing what we should do this summer. my wife spotted la garangiore in the CAMHC magazine. so started to look at sites on the west coast with good cycling possibilities. la garangiore is next door to le grand defi a climbing activity we have been to a few times but there isnt a vendee velo route type cycling path out that way.

anyway i started looking at various possibilities with Yelloh!, Sandaya etc and already some of the sites have no pitches available on our weeks holidays . last year i booked our holiday at Du jard in tranch sur mer between chrismas and new year.

in any case, has anyone seen the price of the western crossings this summer

does anyone have any suggestions for regions with fairly flat cycling routes and somwhere to kayak etc....that isnt really popular

Thanks Stuart, a year ago tomorrow, the time has flown by. We had already lost Charlie who was younger. Harry was 18, he actually died in the caravan. Seeing as we were at Newbury on the way home, we managed to bury him in the pet cemetery, otherwise known as the garden.

Devastating when they go isn't it Mrs Bonce. Our Benji went in June 2020, right in the middle of the Covid situation. He was very ill so we took him to the vets, and the kindest thing to do was not to let him suffer anymore. He was 15. This is the longest we have been without a dog for years, but with the price of insurance and the cost of vets' bills we have decided against having another, unfortunately.

Best Regards,
Colin

Yes, it's horrible Colin. At least Harry died of old age and wasn't really ill, apart from the usual nerve problems, deafness and incontinence, but he was happy until the last day. We may get another, still not sure.

Ironned, Carnac, the standing stones, Quiberon, Auray, Vannes and the whole Gulf of Morbihan is an area well worth more time than the usual.
Also Benodet, Quimper, Concarneau, Pont-Aven and Mt St Michel (although technically just about in Normandy ), Cancale, St Malo, Dinard and Dinan.
Those would be my favourite 3 areas of Brittany anyway.

Would there be any dog-friendly beaches about?

The site that I had earmarked years ago which has a direct beach access turned out to be no good to me as dogs are not allowed on the beach in May!

So I had to look for somewhere else, as I don't think it is fair to the dog when he can't access a beach when he sees one.

DK168 - If you are still interested in the Carnac area (or indeed any where else in France) this site might help.

It also gives information about other places such as attractions and restaurants that allow dogs. Hope it helps.

Benodet might work … not so many cycle paths but you can bike to the resort from some of thr popular campsites such as du Letty and Escale St Gilles which should fit your bill. You’d need to book soon though for August as it’s popular with the French too.

Ferry booked Poole - Cherbourg
1 night at Camping Haliotis
1 night at La Venise Verte
9 nights at Le Logis du Breuil near Royan
Back to La Venise Verte for 3 nights and then Haliotis for 1 night before the ferry back to Poole

Never tried Le Logis du Breuil nor La Venise Verte before and we usually only do a one night stopover on the way down, must be getting old though as I found it a bit of a struggle last year, although I put that down to an outfit (BMW 3 litre X3 and 1600kg Swift) that on paper was ideal but in reality was awful to drive and always felt like it was on the verge of snaking, have upgraded the X3 for a 2 litre BiTurbo Ranger this year though

We have ferries booked for 6 week from early June. Just sorted the Red Pennant insurance. My wife had a broken ankle and collarbone, now nearly better but we had to speak to the medical screening people and tell them.
She is having physio on the ankle so should be fine by June.

We're doing similar, Dublin - Cherbourg, Venise Verte, Royan, maybe La Rochelle then Pontorson.
