Hello all. We are thinking of going to Giethoorn in the April or May half term holiday. It's somewhere I've been looking at for a while, with a view to take our kayaks.
For those who are familiar with the area, does Giethoorn warrant a week long holiday, or is there somewhere else close by which would be a better main destination with Giethoorn being a day trip? Thank you.

We stayed in Giethoorn for a few days in 2017 so things may have changed now. It is a pretty little town/village to wander around but we are not sure about kayaking. There were boats or canoes you could hire to go on the canal. We stayed at Camping Hamstede which was quite adequate and our friends stayed at the Jachthaven camper plats.
You can find out a bit more from our blog page Giethoorn
Giethoorn is mega touristy and a lot of electric rental boats, would not want to sail there with a kayak. Would go a little further north Kalenberg or Blokzijl. Blokzijl has a fantastically beautiful campsite on the water "De Kluft"
Dont forget Blokzijl, lovely old town.

Thank you for your reply Hoedown. It seems you were quite unlucky with the weather when you visited, but your photos do look lovely. We have a touring caravan, so I don't think we could stay at either of the sites you mention. I'd also hoped going in April or May, there may not be quite so many tourists. However, maybe I need to reconsider taking the kayaks!

You could just have picked our holiday destination! Blokzijl looks great, I'm quite taken with Tussen de Diepen. This wouldn't be the first time our holiday has been guided by a response to a post on this forum. The first time worked out well, and I feel this could be just as good. Thank you.
Another thing to consider if you're thinking of going in May is the Ascension and Pentecost holidays are huge in the Netherlands. It seems almost the whole country goes camping and caravanning those weekends. Ascension is the 18th this year with Pentecost the week after. A couple of sites we have tried to book for then are already full at the weekend .

Thank you Albomatty, I spotted that in my searching last night, and it had already slipped my mind! We got caught out in France one year. They knew how to party!!
