Hi all,

I am looking to do a road trip ( via vineyards) down through France using a 4x4 with a RTT. Whilst self contained elements are outside of the footprint of the vehicle and as such it appears that is a barrier to sites that are listed within the 'France Passion' guide.

Can I ask if anyone can recommend books, or guides that list camping sites that will entertain a 4x4 with a RTT that has an outside loo/shower.

Thank you.

Richard

I've seen people with RTTs on municipal sites in France but their inhabitants have always used the site facilities as far as I know. Your best bet is one of the guides: ACSI or Le Guide Officiel Camping Caravaning and contacting individual sites to ask. Alternatively there may be RRT groups on facebook or with their own forums where you could ask.

RTT. Roof top tent. Often seen on 4x4 and various other vehicles. Used extensively for wild/rough camping as well as a campervan on campsites. Not self contained within the vehicle footprint but otherwise they can be totally self supporting. I have an awning and provide my own shower and toilet facilities.

You can use just about anything on Camping Municipals in France. I've seen Landrover RTTs, Australian camping trucks, fire engine conversions and even someone with a stretch limo conversion.
It's the private sites that may get a bit fussy about your camping kit.
All Municipal camping sites have toilet blocks with adequate to excellent washing facilities, though they may lack swimming pools and basketball pitches. They are a lot cheaper than private sites and worth exploring.

Is there any definitive source for the municipal sites?

I have stayed in one before but so many differing sources.

There is the Guide Officiel which supposedly lists all the campsites in France. You have to pick your way through them, but we find it useful. As said above, you can sleep in anything in France, no one will bat an eyelid.

Some towns just have basic details on their own website, others link to a specific website for the campsite. Well worth googling the town you are interested in and putting camping in the search bar with the town name. If the campsite website is a bit basic, more and more are either using Facebook or instagram where you can get a better idea of what they have to offer.

Over a dozen years since I saw my first RTT on the (then) municipal at Azay le Rideau. A young Italian couple had one on top of a small Fiat and access was by an external ladder.

On the site at the time was also a huge chrome american camper almost the size of a single decker bus, and a rig hauled by a flat back truck, which when detached had rooms which opened out from the side. Oh, and a german couple on a three wheeler chopper towing a trailer tent.

I first saw a roof top tent on a campsite in France some 20 odd years ago and was interested enough to check them out back then. I've seen them in use a few times since, at different sites.

Why do you think you'll be limited to where you can stay on campsites in France? Lots of tent campers take a Porta Potti (or similar) to avoid nighttime treks to the sanitaires, we certainly do, although use the site facilities during the day and for showers.

France Passion guide is not campsites it lists farms etc that allow only self contained motorhomes to stop over.

Most comprehensive campsite guide for France is probably Michelin Camping Guide France. Either buy that or if you are going outside July August peak time then get ACSI campsite guide & off peak discount card to allow you to pay usually less than 20euro pn for campsites which will all have toilet & shower facilities.
