I know years ago it was difficult to drive to the south via Rouen and remember there being lots of chat abut this. Has anyone done it recently and can advise please? Thanks in advance

I have never understood the so-called problems with going via Rouen, and have done it trouble-free for years. The roads are all well signposted, follow signs for Le Mans if you are heading west or south-west, if you are going south via Evreux/Chartres/Orleans it is simpler to go through the tunnel at Rouen and then take the road towards Pont de L`Arche (the D6015). Don`t let it worry you, it is very easy.

There was a problem when a petrol tanker caught fire under the Pont Mathilde, which put it out of action for best part of 2 years

Back in the day, coming from Calais / Boulogne, all that was signposted from the north was Paris or Le Havre. Same coming from S going N, no signs for Calais.

They certainly have. I remember about 20 years ago we stopped to consult the map (Michelin) and none of the locally signed place names were on the map. We suspect Rouen bought a job lot of signs and placed them randomly around the city.
Pretty sure this was in the days before the N28 dual carriageway and tunnel which makes Rouen a relative doddle these days.

We have crossed Rouen most years for about the last decade, most recently last October. It's really very straightforward, but my tip would be to have a map handy so that you know which towns are in the direction you want. For example, we were heading towards Le Mans and across the Loire, but needed to follow signs for Caen initially. Don't rely on the town you are aiming for being signed!

And then there's the old joke, not heard it for a while.
'The French ordered new signs for Rouen. When they arrived, they were the wrong ones, but they put them up anyway.'
