Travelling down from Cherbourg to Royan next week via Avranches, Rennes, Nantes, La Roche Sur-Yon,La Rochelle, & Rochefort to our favourite campsite Bois Soleil at St George’s de Didonne the other side of Royan.
First stop will be Avranches or Pontorson. Not in a rush so looking for one or two overnight stops close to the above route. Will be grateful for any suggestions.

The Nantes Camping in Nantes is a top notch place, highly recommended but does fill up quickly so booking is recommended.

The tram is close by so you can take a ride into the city and visit Les Machines de L’Isle

In mid May - when the forecast is distinctly average at best?

Yes

That was certainly the case when we went in mid-may

A few days at Port Punay camping would give you time to visit La Rochelle, Rochefort, Fouras and the island of Aix - all of them worth seeing.

I recommend Camping Municipal Alencon, just North of Le Mans.
Alencon is a rather nice small town, the river is accessible from the campsite and provides a pleasant walk into town.
The campsite is underused and always has space when I've been there, making it quiet and peaceful.
It is ideally placed for an overnight stop when traveling further South yet very few British seem to know this spot.
If you take the overnight ferry from Dieppe by the time you reach here you'll be ready for a stop.

Another vote for Camping Au Port Punay in Châtelaillon Plage, you can catch a bus to La Rochelle from nearby.

This is another site which gets really busy (yes, even in May), we've been 3 times and only just managed to get in by the skin of our teeth. The ACSI rate is very reasonable.

The site itself is clean and has good facilities, the staff are great.
