We normally go via Troyes and lyon, is there a better route, will probably use toll roads, it's the route across to vallon from say the a75 area that is unclear just to miss Lyon, is it worth the bother

There are alternatives from the A75 - but not for the faint hearted, although we do it regularly. It's a spectacular route crossing the Massif Central from the Brioude turn off, down skirting Le Puy, and towards Aubenas. It's long, and winding, and uphill for a long stretch but gentle climbs and then a steeper and more winding descent once you reach the coll. Plenty of people use it, but if you're in any sort of hurry, or unsure of your car's performance then perhaps stick to Lyon. Google recommends the Lyon route but does give the N104 as an option.
We store our caravan in the Ardeche and shall be travelling the above route in July.
Have been on that road from Le Puy down to Aubenas many times after visiting friends outside Le Puy, and always thought I wouldn't like to be towing on it.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
We did in the distant past use that route past Le Puy to Aubenas with a caravan, but found it better to go from Orleans via Moulins to Saint Étienne - then over the hill to Annonay to join the Rhone valley motorway south of Lyon.

A long way round maybe from the A75 - similar to the route we took from Val de Cantobre near Nant to Les Cascades near Bagnols sur Ceze in 2015. Not towing but don't remember any steep climbs or downhills - usually gradual and lengthy. In Sept was v quiet, virtually traffic free.
From A75 take D9 east from J48 - about 10km south of Millau viaduct - everbofy should cross MV at sometime - stunning. Then becomes D999 to Le Vigan, Ganges, St Hippolyte du Fort - one of the most charming routes we've done in France - seriously considered house hunting there before settling for more familiar - and better connected regards transport - Dordogne,
From St H d F head for Anduze, then Ales (where we took the D6 to Cascades) - then presumably D904 / D104 / D111 / D579 to Vallon

By "miss Lyon" do you mean avoid the A6 / A7 through the centre of Lyon? If so then use the A46 which does a loop round the eastern outskirts of Lyon. Coming from the North you pick it up from the A6 just south of Villefranche sur Saone and join the A7 just north of Vienne.
Used A46 3 years running (September, south to north) without difficulty. Then in 2017 (again Sept) missed the A46 turnoff abd ended up going A7/A6 through Lyon -very heavy traffic and one delay of around 20 mins right in the centre.
