We're heading to France next month with our dog. As part of our trip we're thinking of spending some time walking, preferably in a mountain area, as I was thinking this might be a bit cooler for the dog. We've also never been to either area. I realise that some places will be off limits to our dog, but I've
downloaded an app giving some suitable dog friendly walks in both areas. Has anyone else taken a dog to either area and how did you find it? Thank you.

We don't have a dog, nor do I have a great knowledge of the areas you are looking at, however knowing the French, I can't imagine any place that is not dog friendly, as long as you're not on a beach.

I see you have been to France a number of times, the mountain areas are lovely.

We have been to the Pyrenees but before we had our dog. We did see that you could not take them within the national park area but there was plenty of lovely walking outside of this area and lots of cool streams etc which your dog would probably appreciate! I think it would work well with a dog.

Have you considered the Auvergne? Lots of walking and dog friendly - you can even take your dog on the tourist train up the Puy de Dome.

Edited, my son brought his dog on holiday but from experience walking in the hills can be very little cooler than anywhere else if the weather conditions are giving you heat in the valleys. The dog was much happier down by a river on a shady campsite then going for long walks in the hills around our house. We have a house in the Corbieres (foothills of the Pyrenees) and it can be very hot indeed.

If you want to walk in the Pyrenees, or the Alpes, or the Mercantour, or any other National Parks area then leave the dog at home and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Argente4, I love the Alps but it’s hard to recommend walking there without knowing the age, size and stamina of the dog or its owners.

I don't have a dog so can't comment there but you don't 'walk' in either area, you 'climb'!
Don't underestimate your fitness level and be prepared for sudden changes of weather. What can start off in sunshine can rapidly change to dense fog necessitating navigating home by compass

If you want to go down as far as the Pyrennees then I would suggest
Pyrennees Natura

A lovely site and a lake and wild reserve just up the hill

Natura is where we stayed and from memory it is more than 1000m up so is perhaps cooler - we had lovely temperatures in mid twenties the first time we were there but the following year (untypical we were told) it was about 12 degrees and wet. I presume it could also get too hot to walk a dog or people though! We loved this campsite and we’re there in July both times.

Thanks all for the information. We do a lot of walking in the Uk. We recently did Coniston old man with our dog, as well as parts of the South West Coast Path.
We were thinking of shortish hikes of about 5 miles and thought the mountain regions might be a bit cooler. However, it looks like we may have to rethink this and look at other areas.
