Just a `heads-up` to any like me who use their UK debit cards to withdraw euros from ATM`s while in France. A couple of times recently when I have tried to use a machine at a branch of Credit Agricole they have wanted to charge me 5 euros for doing so and so I have stopped the transaction and found another bank. Is this new or have others noticed it?

To be honest I have never really noticed which bank I have used but have never been charged. Could it perhaps be the particular card that you use?

I had Euros in hand, as I took out extras for work trips knowing I would be going to France for a camping trip afterwards.

Thinking back, I always took foreign currencies including Euros before travelling - I like to carry some cash on me to this day.

I don't know which card you use, but we have a Barclaycard creditcard, and had similar happen to us. We also cancelled the transaction and used an ATM from Caisse d'Epargne, no charge from them.

I take my Nationwide debit card to NZ to get cash for paying my sister for Airbnb stays etc. (She prefers cash not bank transfer because they have to keep an amount of cash in case of quakes when electricity goes down.) She has 3 ATMs in town, 2 didn’t have a surcharge & 1 did.

Credit Agricole have been charging 5 euros for a UK card for at least a year, unfortunately. I don't think any other ATMs are charging at the moment, though it is widespread in parts of Spain.

As well as the bank ATMs LaPoste often has one, or you can withdraw cash like you can at a UK post office.

We got charged €5 by CA but La Poste was free.

No charge from the HSBC ATM in Strasbourg when using my Starling debit card.

Ihave been using my nationwide card and my Dutch card at credit Agricole for the last 5 years without a charge

I always use BNP Paribas in France, no charges and a choice of small or large denominations.

In Spain (Canaries) Banco March do not charge.

In Portugal, Santander did not charge for cash withdrawals, even with non Santander cards.

Since Covid, credit cards are much more welcome, so I don't need to withdraw as much cash as I used to!

Been in France nearly 4 weeks & the only cash spent so far is 2€ on an item at a vide grenier. Everything else on cards even drinks at the bar. Probably won’t have to draw any cash for the entire 90 days.

2 of the sites we used while away earlier this year were cash or cheque only - they were both smaller municipals - and another one was cash or bank transfer. Fortunately I have a little stash of cash I keep for just such eventualities. Otherwise we mainly use cash for our trips to the boulangerie.
