We have been a number of times, and like it, but we go because of the good cycle routes. Lots of signposted routes, which we enjoy. If it wasn't for that, we probably wouldn't bother going; the scenery is nice, with small pretty villages; Coulon is the main biggish town, which is quite touristy, but nice to have a mooch round.
We went last June for a week in total on 2 different sites, which I've done reviews on. I believe Niort is quite nice, but we've never visited.
A week would be more than enough IMHO; as I said, we go because there'slots of cycling and so that kept us there on 2 sites for a week. You can of course visit further by car, ie La Rochelle is not that far by car, and sites there would probably be busier (on the coast) than inland.
