Has anyone had experience of arriving at 9/10 pm in Newhaven and parking up safely somewhere overnight? Too late for campsites/CLs to be open, but we're not wanting to start onward journey home that late.
Also, is it OK to arrive early for outward ferries prior to an overnight crossing to Dieppe?
Any advice welcome before we book.

Can't you find a CL and explain the situation? Most owners are very accommodating. If you are club members, and there is a club site nearby, they have a late arrivals area.
The Hope Inn allow stopovers , when we arrived in Newhaven on Monday I noticed 3 motorhomes parked in their car park. Don't know if it's first come or if you need to let them know in advance

Only used it once many years ago now, we arrived hours early for our overnight departure and just parked up without problem.
Back then it was a dismal port without any facilities (that we could find!), so not a particularly nice place to kill time, looks like it may have been improved since then: http://www.newhavenferryport.co.uk/facilities.html
The area in general is quite pleasant, if you've got many hours to kill, think I'd look to maybe spend the time somewhere more scenic.
We arrived about 10pm for the morning sailing and just stayed overnight in the car park (allegedly there was a charge but no-one collecting it.)
We were thinking about staying overnight on the other side of the bay when we arrived back at 2230 but we decided just to crack on round the M25 until past London as we weren't feeling particularly tired and it would save getting caught in the traffic in the morning.

We stopped for a nap in the van for a couple of hours in a service station near Manchester, felt OK so just carried on home ( 3 hours from there) would have stopped again for a doze if we felt like it, but didn't!
