Lived in France for the last 5 years - best value non champagne fizz that is widely available is Lidl's Cremant d'Alsace which you can usually pick up for about 6 euro.
Nearest to Champagne taste is usually Cremant de Bourgogne followed by Cremants from the Loire and Bordeaux - usually plenty under 10 euro.
Not a fan of Saumur which I'd place on a par with Prosecco and not as good as a decent Cava at the same price.
|Our Favourite non champagne fizz is Trousse Chemise from the wine co-op on the Ile de Re - still under 7 euro direct from the co-op or the big supermarkets on the island - don't buy fron markets, boutiques etc as you'll pay well over the odds.
Or at the moment (04/10), the Lidl Blanquette de Limoux at €4.79 a bottle. They also have (sometimes) a Cremant de Limoux - the difference is in the grape mix used to produce each wine. Both are delicious, and said to be the the oldest sparkling wines, even older than Champagne.
